Reader question: Holy Grail Hit List

In your previous posts, you have discussed about your top picks regarding BB creams, foundations, etc. I have tried some of them, and I'm planning on trying others as well. Raves are something when it comes to beauty bloggers and YouTube gurus, but having something as their HG is another. I must admit, there's something about HG status that thrills us readers and viewers and makes us want to buy a particular product.

Being an avid reader of your blog, I can easily state some of your HG's. But can I make a request from you to list down your ultimate HG products? I just want to read about them in a single post and I think I will eventually buy them for myself. I trust your judgement a lot, I guess you could tell. :) Thank you so much! - Marie

Hi Marie! Thank you, this has got to be my favorite question so far. That's true, I write about all the things I love here, but then some are extra special than others. Of course, it depends on my specific set of preferences so I can't guarantee that everything here will be as ideal for you as they are for me. Still, you might just hit the jackpot! It's so difficult to find something that works. I hope you find them at Project Vanity.

But wait, what constitutes a Holy Grail product for me? It's really the best possible mix of value (cost-per-wear), convenience, and efficacy. Here's my list, in different categories!

Face Bases

Primer. I'm a big believer in using only things I need, and I don't feel primer is one of them. I have oily combination skin. I do oil up, but it's manageable! I prefer to use a good foundation and blotting powder/paper to keep the oil at a reasonable level. The truth is that no product can make you stop oiling up, it can only absorb the oil for as long as it is able to.

BB Cream. My ideal BB cream is the Fairydrops Candy Bar BB Cream. This looks like skin, is extremely photogenic, and lasts pretty well. Great for the day, great for night events. I don't mind using an SPF product underneath.

Liquid Foundation. I love light textures and natural coverage, so I'm going with the Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Brightening Makeup. It doesn't have a lasting power I can swear by, but it does make my skin look bright in the dullest of days. Second place would be the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Even Finish Foundation.

Powder Foundation. The Lancome Maqui Blanc Miracle Foundation has mid to heavy coverage, smoothing finish, SPF, and good staying power. I would prefer to use a liquid base since the finish is finer, but the Maqui Blanc is also nice to use by itself.

Concealer. I prefer to use two sets of concealers, one for under eyes and one for blemishes. These concealers have very different textures and coverage suitable for the imperfection at hand. I love the MAC Studio Sculpt Concealer for blemishes and the Clinique Airbrush Concealer for eye bags.

Setting Powder. Setting powder ensures that your makeup stays in place for as long as possible. The best is the Ben Nye Banana Luxury Powder! It's always out of stock though so get one if you see a store with stocks.

Finishing Powder. A finishing powder can make your complexion finer, brighter, just generally better in a can't-put-my-finger-on-it manner. Only the  Guerlain Meteorites Perles in Teint Dore 03 can do that for me!

Retouch Powder. This powder, usually in a compact, is a convenient way to remove any shine that comes out during the day. It's also a great way to re-apply SPF on top of makeup! That's why I love the Etude House Precious Mineral Sun BB Pact, it has SPF50.

Face Color

Blush. Wow, this is a tough one! I love a lot of blushes, but if I can only use one for the rest of my life, it would be Benefit Hervana Blush. It melts on my skin and doesn't look obvious (some would complain about the lack of pigmentation), but I love that it delivers just the right amount of pink. It's versatile too, so it goes with a lot of looks.

Highlighter. It's gotta be the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Lilac Rose. It's so pretty, and can be used as a finishing powder and blush, too.

Bronzer or contour. I love the MAC blush in Harmony. It's not too orange or too tan, and doesn't look like a weird streak even if I layer it on.

Eye Makeup

Primer. I was a huge fan of the Urban Decay Primer Potion but I've found a cheaper, locally available alternative that works just as well - that's the ArtDeco Eyeshadow Base! It's half the price of UDPP but it keeps my eyeshadow in place all day.

Eyeliner. The best eyeliner I've had the pleasure of trying is the K-Palette Real Lasting Eyeliner. It's precise, it's easy to use, and lasts until I remove it. :) Awesome, awesome stuff.

Mascara. I love big, long-wearing lashes but hate removing them. The perfect middleground would be the Fairydrops Platinum Mascara. I get lifted, volumized, and lengthened lashes all day but they are easily soaked off with even just water. (Although I do use a water-based makeup remover).

Eyeshadow. Another difficult category, whew. I would go with Bobbi Brown eyeshadows. They are wearable, and the shades and finishes are utterly lovely. If you love neutral eye makeup, no one does them better than Bobbi Brown.

Eyebrows. You should know this one haha. It's the Shu Uemura Hard Formula brow pencil in 09 Walnut Brown. It's such an expensive eyebrow pencil but I've had for like two years now and I am nowhere near to finishing it. Sulit!

Lips

Lip balm. Hands down the best is Lucas Papaw Ointment. It doesn't just moisturize lips, it heals them! It also has lots of other uses all over the body.

Lipstick. Uhm, can I not answer this? Haha! Before I had a clear choice on what lipsticks I like to use, but now I use whatever is new and is up for swatching. But okay. There is one lipstick that is always, always in my bag, and that's the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Lodhi. Such a pretty coral shade.

Sooo that's my Holy Grail Hit List! Share yours too, okay? Would love to know what you love to use. ^_^

Yes at last this is it. Some Benefit goodies, they really have good stuff. :D

July 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCha

Wow I thought you use primers too, and I agree with you. I also have oily/combi skin and I also don't find primers necessary. :D

July 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterElla

Such a great post Liz! I'll be putting some of these on to my wish list. :)

Thank you so much for answering, Liz! My eyes grew bigger the moment i saw this post. But then i was kinda half-ashamed and half-ecstatic while reading it. I hope it didn't sweat you that much! Hehe. I kinda foresaw
some of the products included here, and was surprised by some. It's glad to know that not everything are that expensive! And most of them i can tell are very sulit and versatile. :)

For a beginner like me (just started being into makeup for over a year), my HG products are just the ones i have which are more or less two products per category. Hehe. BB cream (Skin79 hot pink), foundation (covergirl outlast 3in1), setting powder (ben nye banana :] ), powder foundation (in2it oil control powder foundie), eyebrow products ( in2it eyebrow powder), eyeliner (mac dipdown), e/s palette (wet n wild vanity), mascara (colour collection tripple effect), concealer (revlon photoready concealer, blush (thebalm frat boy), lipstick (a lip tint, tony moly berry magic lip tint), eye primer, contour and highlight (i have none pa).

You could see that most of them are products which are affordable and that you have recommended before. The most expensive one na was the mac dipdown which was accdg to you is superrr sulit and creamy and i couldn't agree more. I also use it on my brows. Thanks again, Liz! I'm sorry to have made you choose a lip product. I think nars really has a good quality (i have one which was given to me), and Lodhi is i think the most flattering peachy pink you've reviewed. I will save up for that and the other products in this post.
Thanks again! And we have the same VANITY!!!!! I kept telling my friend before pa about that. Haha! How i hope it would be one day filled with a lot of makeupsss like yours! Hehe. God bless, Liz! =)

I should probably start investing in that shu uemura eye brow pencil!!! I think it's worth the price and the years of usage. Just like etude house drawing eye brow. That's my HG btw. :) but it only lasts me for 3 months per stick which costs 120++php. Still. Good stuff. :) another HG product is Nyx concealer in a jar! I use it as my undereye concealer and eyeshadow primer! I can also use it for my blemishes once in a blue moon. Can never leave without it. And lastly, my Nyx matte lip cream. I've had it for almost a year and I'm still using it for everyday school look. ;)

this is what i am waiting for. such a wonderful post Ms. Liz :)
all the products you have mentioned are worth consider for i will be trying some of them soon

July 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCaitlin

Great list! Hello Flawless would also definitely be on my HG list too, I'm practically holding on to the last few pumps of my bottle! adding MAC Studiofinish concealer as well. I've been eyeing Ben Nye Banana Powder for a long time so I will surely try that soon. I'm still on the search for additions on my HG list, I've tried a lot of products, but the makeup world is one hell of a jungle and I know I'll discover my new HG products soon :D

Nice :) thanks Liz! I might consider replacing my liquid liner with K-Palette :) here's mine:

I am not into primers so after using moisturizer, I immediately apply MAC lightful foundation.
For the eyes, i would always love Revlon Colorstay 12Hour Eyeshadow Quad in blushed wines, sometimes I would use what the Body Shop Shimmer waves has to offer hehe..
I use in2it liquid liner, but i'm not so "into it" because it smears easily ( i might replace it with other brand once i've consumed it *wink*)
For mascara, I use Bobbie Brown Intensifying Long-Wear Mascara, at first i didn't like it since i didn't get that "oomph!" that I expected, but now I'm loving it!:)
For blush, I love the Benefit Hervana Blush! got a tip from Liz's review of this product ^_^ *super thanks to Liz*
For the lips, I have Revlon Colorburst in Baby Pink and top it with Revlon Super Lustrous in Pink Pop to make the color more lively <3

I have a sudden urge to buy everything listed here!:)) haha I have Benefit HFOW, k-palette real lasting eyeliner, ben nye banana powder; these 3 are my most used and abused daily makeup. Have to save up on Shu's brow pencil!

Lucas Papaw is amazing!!! I use it not only for chapped lips but also when I have rashes/insect bites. It does work. How about your updated HG skincare next time? :)

July 1, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKate P.

this is that one post that i took notes of.
like literally, sinulat ko yung mga parang gusto kong isali sa wishlist.
Thanks Liz.

this has got to be my favorite post yet. i bought the fairydrops bb cream after I saw it here an even though it is quite expensive, I can say that it's totally worth it. It's because of bloggers like you that I never regret buying make up. plus i check here every time a product catches my eye...to make sure if you already did a review about it because I'm a little bit shy (and lazy) to go to make up shops so I read reviews first haha...it helps me decide if I should buy or not

thank you for all your hard work and God bless :)

I should check out the Art Deco eyeshadow base! I'm looking for a good but not-so-expensive primer for my oily monolids. Thanks for sharing about your HGs, Ms. Liz! :)

July 2, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJam

this is what ive been wonderin about. i would always drool over photos you post of you huge make up collection. im sure your hg's are worth every penny but i notice that not everything on you hg list is expensive. they'll be the first on my list. :D i ve been reading your blog for just a couple of moths now but it has been a reliable source of make up/beauty product info. i know i cal also trust your judgment. im kinda picky when it comes to blogs that i read coz im always after educational and fun posts, two things i found in your blog. i enjoy reading your features and ive already learned a lot. more power ms.liz!

July 2, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterconconichi

I made my HG list because of this post! :) I actually got the Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow partly because of your review :D http://softly.nothingspaces.com/2013/07/02/softly-sometimes-the-holy-grail-my-hg-products/

July 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarina

Great question, Marie! I love reading about HG products that bloggers love too. Thanks for the post, Liz!

July 3, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterShev

Hi Liz! Love this post :) Ben Nye Banana powder really intrigues me. I get oily really fast (in an airconditioned setting, give me three hours and I'm oily! Currently using Revlon Colorstay Aqua loose powder. Finely milled and very nice on me). Thing is, these things take a long time to finish, and once I'm done with this I want to get something hopefully longer-lasting. Aren't the Ben Nye powders formulated as stage makeup? Does this affect their texture? I'm worried about caking. Hope you could help me out. :) Thanks in advance!
