Happy Skin brings our favorite princesses to the modern era at their Disney sleepover event

When I was five, my parents took me to watch Mulan on the big screen. She instantly became my favorite Disney princess, and I loved wearing the Mulan costume I got for Halloween. Even after watching all the other Disney movies, Mulan remains to be my favorite because of her strength and her courage to challenge the norm. So I was super happy to see that she’s joining the other princesses in Happy Skin’s second collab with Disney!

No longer the damsel-in-distress in gowns or crowns, these princesses show that they are go-getters who are fun and fearless - in sweats and pajamas. The wardrobe revamp was inspired by their appearance in Disney’s Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2, where Vanellope von Schweetz inspires them to relax and embrace a more comfortable wardrobe.

In true Disney fashion, #HappySkinXDisney had a lavish slumber party launch at the Peninsula Manila to introduce the limited edition 19-piece collection. The brand also presented the Modern Princesses that embody the spirit of our beloved Disney ladies.

Nicole Andersson as the modern day Ariel

Known for her effervescent personality and love for the beach, trendsetter and host Nicole Andersson takes on the helm as the modern day Ariel. For her, a modern day princess is someone who “is a go-getter, [...] and most importantly, does not need anyone or a Prince Charming to come save her.”

Saab Magalona-Bacarro as the modern day Aurora

“Even if she went from princess to peasant, she was such a kind-hearted, gentle woman.” This is how actress and singer Saab Magalona-Bacarro views the Sleeping Beauty, Aurora. For her, a modern princess is someone who can make a difference in their community.

Kylie Verzosa as the modern day Belle

Kevin Balot as the modern day Rapunzel

The epitome of beauty and brains, beauty queen and mental health advocate Kylie Verzosa is the Modern Belle. “She doesn’t think she’s perfect, but she still stands up for what she believes in,” Kylie shares on what she and Belle have in common. Happy Skin even helps out with her foundation called Mental Health Matters PH, which aims to stop the stigma on mental health illnesses.

Trans woman and former beauty queen Kevin Balot used to feel like she was trapped and unable to fully express herself. As the Modern Rapunzel, she breaks free from her tower and goes on to live her life to the fullest. She enthuses, “The moment I was able to do the same, I realized that ‘this is fun, this is life, and this is what I want!’”.

Chii Loyzaga-Gibbs as the modern day Elsa

Laureen Uy as the modern day Mulan

It’s not always easy being a big sister and having to set a good example for the young’uns, but businesswoman Chii Loyzaga-Gibbs makes it look so effortless. As the Modern Elsa, she keeps it cool as she balances being her own boss and being a great sister to her sibling. “I have a really strong bond with my sister [like Elsa and Anna],” she says. “I feel like a modern day Elsa would be running her own business, which is what I do.”

My girl Mulan was represented by one of the pioneer style bloggers, Laureen Uy. She believes in always challenging ourselves and being strong, independent women. “If you tell me I can’t do this, I’m going to do it even more!” she declares.

Finally, singer and model Kiana Valenciano takes on the role as the Modern Jasmine. She loved how sassy Jasmine was in dealing with Aladdin. “I think what makes her special is how straightforward she is and how she puts her foot down.” Her favorite line in the movie? “I am not a prize to be won!”

I really appreciated how each Modern Princess has an advocacy that they stand up for - just like how our fave Disney Princesses all had something that’s worth fighting for.
