How to get men started on a skin care routine

We know that skin care is for everyone. But based on stories shared by members of the Project Vanity community, it seems like getting the men in our lives to use skin care is quite a challenge! It's especially difficult to get them to use sunscreen because of common complaints like “it feels sticky” and “it requires too much effort”.

Doing skin care is a habit that can be learned with your support and by using the right products. It's important to start small so they don't get overwhelmed with having a lot to do, so this is a very easy two-step process to help your husband, boyfriend, dad, brother, or son get started on a simple skin care routine.

Tip 1: Keep a bottle of facial cleanser in the shower.

We’ve heard too many stories of men using body soap on their faces! Help change this habit by putting a gentle facial cleanser in the shower area. If they have shampoo for their hair and soap for their body, tell them this is what goes on their face. Having the cleanser in the shower encourages them to wash their faces during their bath, so they don't think of it as an "extra step".

Tip 2: Give them a face moisturizer with SPF to use daily.

Let's be clear: it's important to wear an actual sunscreen but in a super short skin care routine, a face moisturizer with SPF offers better protection than none! The Olay Regenerist Whip UV is a great face moisturizer for men because it has SPF30 PA+++, which provides broad spectrum protection. This makes it easier for men to hydrate and nourish their skin while also protecting it from the sun in just one step!

The oil-free formula is also the perfect moisturizer for men because it has a "light as air finish" that feels like nothing at all. It absorbs into the skin quickly, dries matte, and doesn't feel greasy. It’s also a good moisturizer for oily skin, which is pretty common among men, because it has a shine-controlling effect that helps in maintaining a matte and fresh face.

Tip 3: Point out the improvements to their skin.

Is their skin softer, smoother, or clearer? Tell them when their efforts are paying off! It feels good to be told that they look good, and it helps to encourage them to stick to the routine and maybe be more open to trying other products.

Men do care about how they look but may feel intimidated when they see women putting so many things on their faces. They may also think that they don’t need moisturizer for oily skin, just because they feel greasy already. As always, proper education is key. Show them that a skin care routine doesn't have to be complicated, and that even just using two products can make a difference.
