New Year, Better You: Four Ways to Achieve Your Best Skin This 2020

Are you one for New Year’s resolutions? Some people may be naysayers but I personally believe in the power of a new year for sparking change! Sure, you’ll need to follow through for the next 11 months to achieve success but getting started is almost always the hardest part. If one of your resolutions this year is to achieve your best skin yet this 2020, here are four things you can do to reach that goal.

Pursue a healthier lifestyle

The skin is the largest organ of the body. When your overall health is not at its best, it’s hard for your skin not to follow suit. Pursuing a healthier lifestyle often reflects on the outside not just as a fitter body, but also as better skin, hair, and nails! Drink more water, eat a healthy balanced diet, exercise regularly, and sleep a full 8 hours every night. Don’t forget to take care of your mental health while you’re at it! Not only will your mind and body thank you for the self-love, but you may just eliminate your skin issues and find a new lit from within glow.

Make sun protection a habit

If you’ve been reading Project Vanity regularly, then you would know that sun protection is one of the pillars of great skin! More than just slapping on sunscreen every morning, make sure that you’re using the correct amount and reapplying as often as needed. Dermatologists recommend adding a broad spectrum sunscreen to your skin care routine that can protect from both UVA and UVB rays with at least an SPF 30 for 97% protection. As much as you can, try to stay indoors and avoid prolonged sun exposure. If you really have to be out and about, wear sunglasses and a cap, and use an umbrella. Don’t fall victim to these 8 common sunscreen mistakes!

Check the cleanliness of your surroundings

You have a healthy lifestyle, you’re sticking to a skin care routine that you know works for you, you aren’t stressed, and you’re always clocking in a good night’s sleep - but why the sudden breakout? You might be tempted to change your skin care routine right away, but stop and check if the culprit for your skin problems is in your surroundings. When was the last time you changed sheets or washed your towel? Are you giving your makeup brushes or makeup sponge a regular deep clean? Do you sanitize your mobile phone often? When you use gym equipment, do you disinfect before use and make it a habit to wash your hands after? Are you in the habit of regularly touching your face? The bacteria that’s lurking around you might be the cause of your breakouts. Extend your hygiene habits not just to yourself but to your surroundings.

Do a skin care edit

If you’re already doing all three skin care tips above and still find that your skin isn’t where you’d want it to be, maybe it’s time to revisit your regimen. Assess the products in your skin care routine and ask yourself these two things: Do I have a solid set of basics? Am I using the right products for my skin type and skin problems?

Building a good skin care routine for oily skin is easier than most people would think, especially when you know your oily skin causes and treatment. A good low pH oily skin cleanser and a sun protection product are two non-negotiables for great skin. As we age, the natural exfoliation process of our skin also tends to slow down so an exfoliant, whether chemical or physical, becomes another necessity. Exfoliating regularly sloughs off dead skin cells so you can keep skin smooth and unclogged, as well as free from hyperpigmentation and dullness. And despite what other people say, YES - it’s best to add a moisturizer in your skin care routine for oily skin..

Olay’s Power Duo (P1,899 for the set) features their most advanced Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream (P1,899 for 50g) and the White Radiance Light Perfecting Essence (P1,299 for 30ml). The Regenerist Micro Sculpting Cream is formulated with actives designed to address aging and dullness. It boosts cell turnover to repair skin problems and keeps skin looking young, bright, and plump. Formulated with niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, it gives the skin a bouncy chok chok glow without the need for a 10-step Korean skincare routine.

Oily skin types unfortunately tend to be more acne-prone so we do have to include products that address post inflammatory hyperpigmentation in our oily skin routine. The Light Perfecting Essence is a lightweight essence that promises a brighter complexion with even tone and reduced dark spots. It also contains niacinamide, and is formulated with xylitol and glycerin to hydrate the skin while brightening it at the same time. The fine shimmers in the essence give the skin a translucent glow that makes the skin look healthy and lit from within.

Still, achieving great skin isn’t just about perfecting your skin care routine. You need to consider your health, your environment, and your products to make sure that they’re all working in support of your goals. What steps have you taken to get your best skin yet this 2020?
