Current skincare routine (first quarter of 2013)

Hi folks! How was your vacation? Hope you made it count. ;) I just stayed at home, built a new lightbox, caught up with my current video game as well as dusty books in my virtual library. Overall I had a great time (well, save for a failed attempt to hang out in Tagaytay aka Traffic Town). I would have loved to go to the beach though, but hey it is summer here all year round. I'll visit one of these months!

Today I want to talk about my updated skincare routine. A few of you girls have been asking me on the forum so I thought I'd write it here even if I didn't change many products from my last skincare post. I pretty much still use everything I wrote about there, except that instead of Shu and Bioderma to remove my makeup I use an underrated drugstore product: Bifesta! It's awesome. I'm using the Moist variant now and true enough it's less drying than the one for oily skin.

Day routine - simple and light, just right for this crazy heat

So what's different in my routine? My daily day moisturizer is now the Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF50 PA+++. I've had this for, oh, a year now but I just opened it last month. Long story. Bottomline, it's a great basic daily moisturizer that has the right SPF number to deal with the intense heat. It's light, non-greasy, doesn't break me out. The only downside is that it has a mindboggling shiny finish. :/ I don't get it but a little powder solves that hiccup.

Still a huge fan of the Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleanser and Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner. I have recently repurchased both! I haven't found anything to beat this cleansing duo so I would say they're holy grail material for me.

As for the eyes, I use the Benefit It's Potent! Eye Cream day and night. I like that it's very light yet still moisturizing. I'm lazy most days though so I skip the eye cream and just use whatever serum or moisturizer I have on there.

Night routine - heavier, more treatment-oriented

For evening, I use the Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution then top it with the Clinique Moisture Surge Intense. This is a powerful duo - the serum helps clear blemishes while the moisturizer maintains the glow and suppleness of my skin. Intense, indeed! Night time is the best time to use treatments since the sun is not around to complicate things, plus our skin is more receptive since we are at rest.

I read somewhere that it's not wise to use products with active ingredients during the day, under the sun. The heat and other environmental factors stress out the skin so you might not get the benefits you need anyway.

I rotate the Kiehl's serum sometimes though, and skip the moisturizer. I love using the Shu Uemura TSUYA Skin Serum and Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate for reviving dull skin. When I get sick or stressed, my skin shows that internal damage. These serums are like a powerful wake-up, er, slap on my face. Great stuff!

So there you go! I have a few new serums to try but truth be told I'm extremely hesitant. I tried a new one last weekend and now I'm stuck with two very angry pimples. :( Soooooob. And here I was pleased as pie that I have cleared most of my blemishes away!

Ah, the perils of beauty blogging. What's your current skincare routine?

Hi Miss Liz! I may be a new reader of your blog but you have already helped me with so much!
And this skin care routine just wow-ed me. :) We use some products in common and I also loveee the Bifesta cleansing lotion for Sebum control. It's an amazing combination product. Thanks for the post, Iv'e found more products to try. :D More power to your blog!

Love your skincare regime! I have to agree on using products w/ active ingredients during the day. It's a waste of money, really. Sometimes at night I skip moisturizer to let my skin 'breathe' and also to give it a break from all the stuff that I put to it. I've read that it works wonder for the skin. Mine's been the same for about a year now. I have VMV, Physiogel and my favorite organic skincare products in my stash. I'm still in search of an anti-ageing serum. But I can't seem to justify forking over more than 3k for a skincare product. Ugh. So I try to be practical sometimes by watching what I eat and drinking lots of water. I might try Argan Oil soon.

I'm also currently using the Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner. I've had it for five months and I'm not even halfway through yet! :) It's so sulit. I also have the Kiehl's Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, but I haven't tried it yet because I'm waiting for my nasty pimples to dry up. I'm excited! :)

i've yet to try kieh's rare earth cleanser! Been reading your entries on it, and i've been itching to try it out myself. I'm just worried that it might break me out, specially since I have sensitive skin.

Just wanted to share my regimen that does wonders on my face too (except for those annoying blackheads):
PM: Shu cleansing oil, Shu Red:Juvenus toner, Shu Tsuya serum, Avene Skin Recovery Creme
AM: Avene Cold Cream, Shu toner, Avene Skin Recovery Creme

Can't wait to try out Etude's wonder pore too! Thanks for the review, Liz! :)

Hey! I have you to thank for the Wonder Pore discovery :) The toner alone did wonders for my skin, and now I'm thinking of purchasing the whole line. Question : just how effective is the clay mask? Did it really remove your blackheads?

I'm really interested in trying serums and different moisturizers. Right now I'm just using Garnier's facial wash, toner and facial cream. It doesn't break me out, neither does it moisturize my skin. I think it's high time I up my beauty regimen a little bit. Thanks for this post Ms Liz!

I gave Bifesta a whirl because of you! I'm going to try the Bright Up variant once I finish the Sebum one. :) The Kiehl's MRC broke me out which is such a shame since it's a lovely product. I'm definitely going to look into that Kiehl's cleanser once I head out! x

I am using Etude House's wonder pore. Its mild but I can feel it works. Great for those with sensitive skin. Been thinking of getting a new cleanser. I'm thinking Shu ultime8 beauty oil ( & get over how expensive it is already) or Kiehls, either the rare earth line or the blue herbal gel cleanser. Oh and Bifiesta too!

I'm intrigued with the Wonder Pore toner but I have recently started a new skincare regimen which is working out great for me so I'm hesitant to introduce something new.

A relative of mine told my mom that all he used for his once pimply face was Kojic Acid soap. I didn't try it out because I was worried it might just irritate my sensitive skin but my sister used it anyway. I then got married and didn't see my sister as often as before but when we did finally meet up, I was shocked as to how smooth and rosy her face was! The soap got rid of her pigmentation as well. Convinced, I decided to try it out myself and used Kojie San soap on my face everyday. Sure enough, my skin felt much smoother and looked rosier but I still had flaky patches of skin near the corners of my mouth and other areas of my face (I have combination skin). I also wanted to start using serums since I'm already 28.

So I did a bit of research and found that Pond's Gold Radiance Precious Youth Serum had a lot of good reviews. It also had Retin A which I consider a must-have ingredient for skin care. After using it one evening and checking out my skin the next day, I saw that it already addressed my flaky patches and made my skin brighter and even more supple and smooth. I've been using it for a week and my skin still remains smooth, bright, and supple with no dry patches of flaky skin at all! I don't even need to use moisturizer.

Anyway, just wanted to share my skin care regimen :D I just feel so glad that I managed to find a regimen that worked out for me that doesn't necessarily cost an arm and a leg (one of my goals for this year is to cut down on costs). I'm eyeing the Pond's Gold Radiance eye cream next.

Hi Liz,

Thank you for sharing the products that you use for your skin care routine. It gave me an idea on what product I can try. I'm also using Bifesta Moist as my make-up remover and I'm already on my second bottle :)
