Here’s What You Need To Know About Gluta-C’s New Sunscreens
I’m always down for a sunscreen launch and with the rainy season here and well, I now find myself dreaming of good weather. But rain or shine we can all benefit from sun protection, which is why I’m happy to share that Gluta-C has dropped three sunscreens that adapt to your routine, protect against UV rays, and is packed with all the right skincare ingredients. The Brightening Tone-Up Sunscreen (P399.75/50ml, special introductory price P319.75!) protects as well and smooths and brighten the complexion instantly. The Brightening Tinted Sunscreen (P399.75/50ml, special introductory price P319.75!) comes in two shades, Light and Medium, that doubles as sun protection and a base for a quick ready to go look.
In an intimate launch, Gluta-C invited Dr. Cat Porciuncula to talk everything sun protection and explain the science behind Gluta-C’s brightening sunscreen line. In a talk entitled Protect, Brighten, Glow, Doc Cat shared that the sun is actually one of our greatest friends. Triggering vitamin D synthesis, regulating the circadian rhythm, and boosting serotonin levels. But it can also be a nasty enemy with photoaging, hyperpigmentation, and skin barrier damage. Wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of elasticity caused by repeated UV exposure accounts for 90% of visible skin aging!
The Science
Let’s start with UV rays. UVA penetrates deep into the dermis (A is for aging) and we are at risk year-round no matter the weather. UVB reaches only the epidermis (B is for burning) and causes sunburns and is strongest at midday. Sun protection factor (SPF) tests how much the sunscreen protects from UVB light with SPF 15 offering 93% protection from UVB, SPF30 with 97%, and SPF 50 with 98%.
On top of the SPF scores, products now also come with PA+ scores for customers to better weigh their sun protection needs. The PA+ system measures protection against UVA. PA+ is suitable for minimal sun exposure. PA++ is good for everyday indoor to outdoor use. PA+++ is recommended for extended outdoor activities and PA++++ is best for intense, prolonged sun exposure. Gluta-C brightening sunscreens carry SPF60+ PA+++ offering both high UVA and high UVB protection in one formula!
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and to apply generously and reapply every 2 hours. Also want to sneak in a quick reminder that we have to use sunscreen year-round!
The Formula
Glutathione & vitamin C are better together, both potent skin-brightening antioxidants that form the core of Gluta-C’s brightening technology. Vitamin C regenerates glutathione and blocks melanin production and together have a synergistic protection against UV, blue light, and free radicals. The combo lightens dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, inhibits melanin production, neutralizes free radicals that cause cell damage, strengthen the skin barrier and boost collagen synthesis.
Doc Cat’s favorite ingredient in the new sunscreens is arbutin. Lots of products may have glutathione but this sunscreen line is unique with their use of medical grade arbutin that safely and effectively replaces bleaching ingredients. Gluta-C sunscreens do more than just protect, it brightens and improves the skin with every application.
A New Layer of Protection
On top of UV rays there’s new research into something called blue light. Blue light is a high-energy visible light emitted by the sun, smartphones, and gadgets that can penetrate deeper than UVA rays and generates free radicals that damage skin cells. Research says it can accelerate skin aging with enough exposure much like with UV rays. Is blue light from our gadgets the next big thing we should worry about? Maybe? The research is still in it’s early phases but getting ahead of the curve and being diligent about sunscreen won’t hurt.
The key ingredient against blue light in Gluta-C’s new sunscreens is Jeju root extract that is rich in antioxidants that neutralize free radicals generated by blue light, forming a protective shield and preventing pigmentation and collagen breakdown. And their MoistureBoostTM technology delivers deep, lasting, hydration without heaviness for a lightweight, non-greasy feel.
A Daily Glow Demo
Makeup artist Chie Gonzalez showed how she utilized the Gluta-C line up of products to create a fresh faced makeup look. First, toning the skin with their Kojic Plus Acne Control Toner (P142/ml) and then blending the brightening and tone up sunscreens for her base. Aside from sharing her tips on application she also shared her philosophy around makeup. Makeup is to enhance your features and make you love them, enhance what’s there not cover up.
Left to right: Tone-Up Sunscreen, Brightening Tinted Sunscreen (Light), Brightening Tinted Sunscreen (Medium)
I my hand at using the tinted sunscreens as a base with the shade light for my face and the shade medium to add warmth in areas I would usually hit with bronzer. The tint worked to even out my skintone and I ended up with a dewy moisturized face perfect for everyday without feeling too mask-like with a face full of sunscreen. I can see this being a car makeup kit staple!
