Fabulous At Fifty and Beyond: Five Lolas share their beauty routines

This isn’t your Lola’s beauty routine! Or is it? When you’re young and getting into kikay things for the first time, you tend to go hard on trends and do a lot of crazy experiments in the name of staying on-point with your beauty game. But once you’ve had the time to find what practices and products work for your skin and your comfort zone, you also develop confidence in your unique approach to beauty! I wanted to know what women of a certain age prefer when it comes to beauty so I reached out to five Lolas to raid their stash!

Susan O. (age 69)

My skincare routine is composed purely of Shiseido products. I wash my face with Shiseido Benefiance Creamy Cleansing Foam and follow up with the Benefiance Wrinkle Resist24 Balancing Softener. For daytime, I slather on some Benefiance NutriPerfect Day Dream and exchange this with Benefiance NutriPerfect Night Cream in the evening. The last step is the Bio-Performance Super Corrective Eye Cream.

My daily makeup is all of seven steps: sunscreen, foundation, undereye concealer, face powder, brow pencil, lip balm, and lipstick! But if I had to choose the bare basics that are always in my makeup bag, I can trim it down to only four: Sunscreen, eyebrow pencil, lip balm, and lipstick.

Erline G. (age 63)

My daily routine is to apply Chantelle Lanolin Cream then apply Heliocare Ultra Gel SPF90 (available from dermatologist clinics) every morning. To remove makeup, I use The Face Shop Real Blend Rich Cleansing Oil. For facial wash, I use Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser.

I don’t apply makeup unless I have some important matter to attend. Then I just put concealer on my blemishes and my eye area. But for occasions when I have to put on more makeup, the product I like most is the Happy Skin Face the World Air Serum because it feels so light on my skin, and Happy Skin Don’t Get Mad, Get Even Powder Foundation. Then lipstick. I apply eye makeup only on special occasions or parties. My philosophy is to apply less makeup as much as possible, so as to spare me from taking it off afterwards!

My routine is pretty simple, and I regularly put on some sort of Japanese face mask.

Grace H. (age 55)

First of course, I believe your beauty must start from within, so always have faith and stay positive in life. Physical beauty, I try to work out at least three times a week through dancing, zumba, and yoga. Most importantly, I try to sleep between 10:30 pm to 6 am - at least 7 hours for cell regeneration.

For my face, I don’t have specific products. I use and buy what’s on sale, and I don’t use super expensive products naman. Right now, I am using Avon Anew Essential Super Serum, Anew Ultimate Day Multi-Performance Cream, and Anew Ultimate Night Multi-Performance Cream, and I apply them morning and evening. Bottom line, just make sure you always moisturize your face no matter what! I also Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water as a makeup remover.

Daida A. (age 78)

I would describe my beauty routine as very simple. I hardly ever use any makeup, but I’ll put on some lipstick for a party. I do have a skincare routine with all Olay products. I use the Total Effects Anti-Ageing Serum and the Total Effects Day Cream. My most frequently bought beauty product is the original variant of Heno de Pravia soap.

Rita M. (age 78)

I have a lot of products given to me as gifts or some that I buy when I like the tester at the store, but my daily routine is just facial wash. I even forget to put moisturizer on most days. I use Shiseido Perfect Whip that I bought three tubes of when I went to Japan, and I also use that to remove makeup. When I do remember to put on moisturizer, it will either be Instant Glow Argan Oil, Celeteque Advanced Anti-Wrinkle Collagen Gel, or Pond's Age Miracle Wrinkle Corrector Night Cream. Whatever the mood dictates.

For makeup, I love BB cream and how shiny it looks, giving my skin a more youthful look. I alternate between Etude House Precious Mineral BB Cream and Ever Bilena EB Advance Anti-Wrinkle BB Cream. I also use stick foundation on my nose and under the eyes [as concealer]. Then I always put on a gray/silver eyeshadow, my favorite color, and I never leave the house without at least two lipsticks. I can’t live without lipstick!

It was fun discovering the diversity of products that these lovely women prefer to use, including hard-to-find options that they have to shop for overseas for. There are also classic drugstore favorites that you can score from practically any grocery store, which are perfect for those who prefer to have their faves at arm's reach. If you’re looking for more high-low choices, do check out our Splurge vs. Save article!

Most importantly, this has been a great reminder that age is really just a number. You can be as kikay and lipstick-crazy as ever, and continue to have fun with your beauty routine.

Do you know what your lola's favorite products are? Which parts of your beauty routine would you want to keep doing even when you're older?
