Red hot Maybelline Colorsensational Lipsticks

Are you still reluctant to wear loud lipstick? I'm not going to force you if it's really not your thing, but if you want to then here are a few steps to ease you into your scandalous color of choice. Remember - it's all in your head! Loud colors are fun to wear and shouldn't be taken too seriously. It's just lipstick.  You can take it off any time.

That being said, today I want to talk about a mini-selection of daring Maybelline Colorsensational Lipsticks (P399). These come in different variations of red (except one) hence the color of the tubes.

The formula is just okay. It's pigmented and fairly smooth, although I find that it can be drying after a couple of hours (you know the SOP for this). The lasting power of the bright reds are good at three hours plus a stain, but the lighter ones like the peach and coral - not so much at less than two hours. It has this strong sweetish vanilla scent that fades away after a few minutes.

Overall, the Maybelline Colorsensational is not too shabby for the price. I do love the reds here, which I have finally swatched for you!

Let's begin.

Peachy Scene is a frosty pink with a hint of peach. I'm not into frosts to be honest, but I appreciate the soft color and luster of this shade. It's pretty when worn!

Coral Crush is a hot coral pink. The formula is a bit streaky on my lips which I find weird, considering that it's fairly pigmented. Anyway, not my shade and I don't know why (most lipsticks work on my medium yellow-slightly-neutral skintone).

Are You Red-dy is an orange red. I think this would be much more flattering on warmer skintones.

Very Cherry is the bomb! It's a neon, blue-based red that's hard to miss.

Red Revival is a deeper, blue-red that has a slight resembralnce to MAC Russian Red. Well this one is has a shiny finish so it really won't look like Russian Red, but the concept is the same.

So there you go. My top picks are obviously Very Cherry and Red Revival, two memorable shades that are worth taking to town. ;) I know you're going to ask: how do you choose the best red lipstick for your skintone? My quick answer is to just go on a swatching spree and wear what you feel looks fantastic on you. Or whatever you're in the mood for.

But there are reds that are fool-proof, and these are usually the blood-red and/or blue-based ones like Red Revival. Hope that helps!

What's your must-have red lipstick?

Wow! Excited akong lumuwas para bumili ng mac. I might try dat russainred dupe. Does the lipstick budge or transfer easily?

Yes, the last two reds look great on you! I also use a red Maybelline lipstick..though I'm not sure what shade :)

I've been waiting for this post! :) I love wearing red because of its foolproof classic look. Wearing a blue based red makes your teeth appear whiter! If you find it too loud to your taste, you may use a light layer first then build up the color gradually until you get used to it. You just need to find your "shade" and learn how to properly apply the lipstick (for a more polished look, you need to use a brush and a lip liner, if you have dry lips of course you need to exfoliate and moisturize your lips first). I've started wearing red three years ago. My favorite red is MAC Russian Red. Actually, it's the only red I wear. I love it so much that I can't live w/out it. Haha. Good to know that there are cheaper alternatives to the famous red shades! Thanks for this post, Liz!

Ooooh I love Red Revival on you! I have 2 red lipsticks at the moment and I seldom use any of them. I guess I must experiment more! :)

I'm still afraid of wearing reds, but I'm very intrigued by that coral shade. I might go for that to push my limits a bit, as it's already brighter than my usual ones (I go for tame pinks mostly).

is this the same to the MAybelline US na Whispers?like rebranded it lang or they're 2 different lines talaga.
I like their reds.
pero sayang na drying sila at some point.
id rather have no lip color than have a drying lipstick on.

Red revival is so sosyal! I love wearing reds because it adds glam to an outfit. Anyway, my current red is Revlon ripened red, usually i get complements whenever i'm wearing it.:)

Out of 5 shades you've swatched, I will definitely get the shade that will suit me. That is the Are You Red-dy, it's because I fall on Warm skintone. Quite affordable for P399, not to mention that packaging looks classy. Thanks for sharing!

Ive tried very cherry before from a pasalubong. Its gorgeous! Packaging looks so posh. It does feather a little at the edges, but just layer a lip liner underneath and problem solved. But my one true love would still be russian red. I wear very cherry in the mall, parks, sometimes work. I take the russian with me to black-tie events and all night parteys!

Maybelline has such nice lipsticks. Pleasing pigmentation and fairly priced. I buy most of my stuff there. Love their Jewels line because the shades look so rich. :) As for loud lipsticks, my boldest (and latest!) buy has been Color Sensational Fifth Ave. Fuschia. It wasn't such a big adjustment, since I had this deep plum Shiseido lipstick at home that I could mix it with if I wanted something toned down.

My fave shade of Red was purchased from Maybelline too. Color Sensational (the old case) in Brick Rose. Nothing too bright red, but super classy.

it's nice to know that there are other alternatives apart from my time old favorite, MAC's russian red. i very rarely wear bold colors (my go to lipstick is MAC's cosmo or haute altitude, which is similar to sunny seoul), but when i do i only reach for one thing: russian red.

that being said, it's disappointing to hear that the lippies are a bit drying. however, that can, as you said, be easily remedied. a swipe of lip balm before putting it on will do the trick. or, sometimes, because i feel it affects the longevity of the lippy (i.e. putting the balm on before makes the lipstick slide off), i put the lip balm on top. i still get the same moisturizing effect. :)

The red I love the most is MAC Heartless. Too bad it was a limited edition shade. Maybe they'll rye promote it in another collection on the future. :) Reds aren't my thing in general though. I much prefer deep plums/berry shades.

I've only ever had one good experience with a Maybelline lippie. Love their mascaras and gel liner, but the lipsticks are so dry that they skip on my lips (hate that feeling) even when I moisturize before application.

I have Are You Red-dy. I saw it in a magazine that its nice for Medium skin tones. Its one of the reds that I have. Pretty good pigmentation. I also recommend it!

I also like the last two shades of red. I've never really tried super red lipsticks before but maybe I'll try it next time and see how will it look like on me. Can anyone recommend a long lasting red lipstick that is not drying? Moisturizing the better. I really have a problem with chapped lips that's why I actully stay away from lipsticks and just stick with different lipbalms. Thanks!

I agree, the last two shades are the best from the line. I think I've swatched Are You Red-dy before when I was still looking for my signature red. The scent bothered me a little. Could just be me. So I ended up getting something from Revlon, also because I've always been a Revlon baby. Hehe. The shade is Really Red. Absolutely love it.

I like Very Cherry, you're right, it is the bomb!!! It lights up the whole look. I can imagine wearing it with very subtle or even no makeup. Sayang if the lipsticks tend to be drying. Before I buy I'll try the tester and after 2 hours or so I'll decide. I don't mind retouches but I'm turned off by drying effects from lipsticks. Thanks for your review and swatches.

Based on the swatches alone, I'd like to have Coral Crush and Very Cherry. I find these colors attractive :-)

March 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaybelle

ooh maybelline, aficionado of that brand for almost three years, I'd wearing the coral crush, I love how its not scenestealer at office. okay lang.btw, you look good in 123,very sweet.:)

Very cherry looks great on you! But I am more interested with Are you Red-dy for my skintone.... :) I will check this out

March 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterIssa

for the coral color try Lancome's L'Absolu Nu in 307 :) it's a nice formula they have pinky-rose shades as well. but for red i love my The Face Shop lipstick in number 10.

March 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMissPixie

A red lip really commands attention and I love how my face looks so alive with a swatch of red on my lips. Parang I want to get Red-dy for my mom and Red Revival for me :) Does the formulation work without a lipliner? Whats the rule ba on lipliners? I was told before that lipliner is required if you're wearing a bold red to minimize smudges.

March 6, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdianecapile

Red Revival is a show stealer! My must have red would have to be Ruby Woo.

But! Remember Lipstick Queen? I have Red Sinner and it resembles Ruby Woo a LOT! Less drying, and it's a close match -- in fact, it's even brighter. For those who put the R in red lips, you might want to check this out. Revlon Really Red also has great reviews!

March 6, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPaulina

I have the Pink peony one! I love how it stay for hours. I'm not into lipsticks so I just rely on what the sales lady said would look good on me. Luckily, it did. I'm not fond of red colors. I think it'll take me a long time before I'll be confident enough to wear it!

March 7, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNina

Very cherry is indeed the bomb! And as for your question on how do you choose the best red lipstick for your skintone? My quick answer is... the one that my boyfriend kisses me with the most :) And for that matter, my must have is the MAC Russian Red - takes my boyfriend's breath away whenever i put it on.

March 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAnne

I just recently bought Very Cherry and enjoyed using it. But I'm still in love with MAC Russian Red and Ruby woo though http://prudencemd.com/beautylust/?p=399
