Get used to wearing loud lipstick in five steps
Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 9:33AM "I don't have the skin tone for it!", "My lips are too big!", "I'm shy, and "My boyfriend doesn't want me to" are some of the reasons girls are scared of wearing colorful and loud lipstick. Well I don't want to force you if you really can't but if you've always wanted to BUT blah blah blah then girl, maybe you're afraid of something more than just eye-catching lips. Maybe you don't feel too confident about your own beauty, which is why you don't want to draw attention to it.

That's just wild conjecture, of course. I'm just basing it on the comments I've received in all my lipstick posts. :) Anyway, today I'll teach you how to get used to wearing loud lipstick. The trick is in realizing that you're the only one holding yourself back - not your judgmental friends or boyfriend, not your perceived lack of good looks. I think we're all beautiful and a hot pink or red lipstick is just the perfect punctuation mark!

Step 1: Invest in a classic and universal color. MAC has great lipstick shades that have stood the test of time. One is Russian Red, a bold luscious color that flatters any skin tone. If you like pink, Pink Noveau is also a popular choice.

If you're on a budget, go for Avon lipsticks. They make great ones, plus they're user-friendly to boot (creamier than MAC). I would recommend Carmen Red (warm red) and Island Glow (creamy pink peach). Revlon also has fab lipsticks - Siren (orange), Fire & Ice (true red), and Coral Berry (pink coral)

Step 2: Start small. The cool thing about loud, i.e., pigmented lipsticks is that they leave a beautiful stain. Start staining your lips first with your desired color and increase intensity as you go along. This will allow you to see how beautiful the color can look on you.
To stain your lips, dot a bit of color all over your lips then slather on some lip balm. Even the whole thing out with your finger.

Step 3: Wear your color everyday at home. Doesn't matter if you're just staying home and doing the dishes - find glamour in the mundane with your punch of color on! You'll find yourself smiling when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. See, you look good.
Step 4: Tweet, Facebook, or Instagram a photo of yourself wearing the lipstick. Watch the likes and "love its" roll in. I have never received negative feedback when wearing loud lipstick, in fact, it's the opposite! People always notice and compliment me whenever I have loud lip on. If I can pull it off then you most certainly can.
To give people some context, say something like "Getting the courage to wear red/ pink lipstick! I love (the shade you're wearing)!"
Step 5: Go out and show off. See heads turn and get your friends asking "What lipstick are you wearing?" A new extraordinary lip color is much like a new hair cut: people are fascinated by the newness of it all and want to know everything about it. Just enjoy the attention and feel the newfound self-confidence coursing through your veins.

Everyone in red...because we can! And we all look good in it! We're all wearing one shade here - Cover Girl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Hot.
But what if my boyfriend forbids me to wear loud lipstick?
Dear, I'm with a guy who can't stand intense lipsticks. Know what I do? I don't wear them if I'm going out with him. I would hate for him to feel uncomfortable and wearing a less intense lipstick is a small price to pay. It's called compromise; it makes for a healthy relationship.
But if I'm going to a party or with other people, then I'll wear a loud lipstick whenever I please. It's not like my whole life revolves around him! Neither should yours. ;)
And that's it! I hope this helped. Do share if you have more tips! How did you get used to wearing loud colors?

This is very helpful! I am the type who most of the time stay safe when it comes to lip color. I've been trying to look for choices for more colorful choices. Thank you for your tips! :D
Boys/men are so weird when it comes to bright lipsticks. To them, a red lip almost always instantly = "too much." Then if you pile on black and grey shadow to make the most intense smokey eye ever, but you pair it with a natural lip, they hardly notice you're wearing makeup at all. HAHA. That's how it is with my titos at least. Whenever I wear red to a family party, they tell me that I shouldn't try to look older... which wasn't my point at all, but I just nod anyway. haha
Hihi! I love the last part. My boyfriend loves me with red lipstick though. Mas bagay raw red/orange shades sakin kesa pa-baby pink. Neutral colors are the safest pa rin when going for a date night look. :)
Woah! Best post! Hehe love it Ms.Liz , I can relate with this thing. Lols. Before, when I am not into makeup, I am afraid of wearing loud lipstick, so I always stay with lipgloss, but dang! When I discovered blogs! It truly changed me! Thou I have big lips, and I used to hate it before, now, I so so love it! majority of my friends first notice my lipstick and they keep on commenting that they really like my lips. Kaya ngaon, super love ko na to wear loud and bright lipstick, parang I can conquer the world! haha epic! Pero, just like what you've mentioned, if someone forbid you to wear a bold lipstick (my dad) I don't wear it whenever I am with him. It's just a matter of respect I think.
I agree!!:) I also love loud lips! Your step #3 is super true!! I love seeing myself in the mirror looking fab even though I'm a little bit tired of some household chores! HAHA! About #4, I always find my pictures of me wearing loud lips with the most number of likes and with the question "What shade are you wearing?" and comments like "I like your lippie!"
My boyriend doesn't aloow me to wear loud colors of lipstick. The simpler the better 'daw'. But they don't understand us girls. We want a bit of color to make us feel sexy. I do cheat in wearing red when i go out with my girlfiend. ;) thanks for the info ms. Liz. :) ill definitely try the avon products. :)
Good thing my hubby doesn't care.. Actually, he supports me..Though not financially(in my beauty leisures only, haha!) I'm just intimated wearing loud lip color because it really defines the shape of my lip and I'm kinda not confident about it cause obviously, I'm not blessed with gorgeous lips that's why I envy Anne Curtis forever, you know! Haha!
As a fan of bright lipstick, I have to say that each and every word on your post is true, true, true! Thanks for the lovely article.
:)

such a great article, Liz. this is going straight to my top 5. :) i do love bright lips but i'm usually too lazy to bother swiping on anything more than a lip balm. i'll work on developing a habit for lip color as i do tend to look quite pale.
re: boyfriend dilemma, i really don't understand it because my bf has never forbidden me from doing anything. if he did, i'd raise an eyebrow and question his authority over my decision-making. at the end of the day, you gotta do what makes you happy. :) but if you'll be out with him, then okay, compromise.
That's what I do too, I don't wear my loud colored lipsticks when I'm with my boyfriend only when I'm with out with my friends. :)
I have the opposite problem of having big lips, my lips are so small and thin that it's depressing to put lipstick on it and I would always wish I had a larger canvas to swipe my bright lipsticks on.haha
Hehe good thing I am already comfortable in wearing reds or hot pinks but unfortunately I
I still couldn't find a good match for my skintone when choosing coral, orange lippies. :( Great tips overall! I love the tip on wearing it at home and taking and sharing photos!
Great blog post Ms. Liz! I really enjoyed reading every word and will always consider your tips. Well actually I am now in the mood to try loud lipstick shades. Haha. Have you tried a sort of purple lipstick color? Heard of MAC's VIoletta and it was earning good reviews from Makeupalley :) Of course, bright pink lipsticks are always gorgeous! <3
Love this post. I actually love wearing loud orange lippies. I don't have the boyfriend problem though, since he's pretty open to this kind of stuff, but I have the dad to worry about. What I do is, when I leave the house I don't put anything on but lip balm, but once I'm outside I just wear whatever color I feel like ;)
Great post!
I have full lips so I used to be afraid of wearing bold lipstick, but as I grew older I realized how beautiful my lips are. My boyfriend doesn't actually care what lipstick I wear, but I don't wear red lipstick when I'm with him because he won't kiss me when I have it on for fear of ruining it. Haha! Red lipstick is perfect for those occasions when you want to stand out, though!
This post is really for me haha. Thanks for this post Ms. Liz. My boyfriend doesn't want me to wear make-up at all. blah. But he supports me in my passion with blogging. It's just uncomfortable that whenever I buy something (make-up, skin care, girl stuff), I tend to hide it from him as much as possible to avoid arguments. He always tells me I don't need those but hey I'm a girl! I'm also afraid in trying bold lipsticks because I don't have that much confidence wearing it in public. I just wear it when I'm at home (weirdo?) Thanks for this post, definitely I'll try wearing red whenever I'm not with him. I have red lippies but I've never used them. Now, I have the courage to try it. I really like your advise about tweeting or posting to instagram. I'll do it! :D
Thanks for this post Liz! After reading this, now I'm more confident to flaunt my pretty pout! I actually have CYY on today at school! Enjoying the stares indeed! I can relate to your tips! I wear my bold lippies at home too "for practice", and friends end up liking the photos I post on FB and IG. :) I might have skipped the "start small" part, though... Full-on in your face application agad! :P
I never even thought of starting with stains, I just went for the bright lip colors right away (even if I was a little afraid of what others'd think) - reds, bright corals, and hot pinks - because I saw bloggers like you, Nikki, and Sophie rocking them. :D I used to think it was / would look unnatural on me, but now I love em :)
Look at Anne Curtis she has big lips but aint afraid to flaunt it with bold colors :)
Great advice Liz! My hubby naman doesn't care with the lipstick I use as long as I'm not wearing too much eyeliner. I love dark eyeliners and he disapproves of it so yeah what I do is when I'm with him I use a barely there look, no eyeshadow just thin eyeliner and light coat of mascara then red lip color and he loves it.
We should not be afraid to flaunt or accentuate our lips. After all, it counts with the instant sexy look! :)
well well, i've been forgetting my red lippies nowadays... time to bring them out and thanks for reminding me... love this post! i tend to reach more for the safe shades ....
I honestly want to thank you for this Ms Liz! I feel like wearing bold colors makes me out of place in a barkada that doesn't wear make-up at all. I really want to wear my reds but I can't because they'll tease me or I'll look funny cause I'm the odd one out. I'm going to try these tips and see where it can take me. Thanks again!
Hooray for this post! :) This is what I love about Project Vanity. It's definitely more than just the reviews, EOTDs, OOTDs, FOTDs, or tutorials! Rather, it empowers and helps other individuals to try different things and see a different side of themselves. And it's definitely a community. No BS. I don't dare pull your leg. I just hope to get across how much I appreciate this site. I've been hooked since I found it :)
Anyway, I have a lot of friends who are 'afraid' of loud lipsticks, but I definitely think they can rock them! I'll share this post to them so they'll be encouraged. :) I'm planning to get MAC's Pink Nouveau or even NARS' Schiap soon hehe I already have a loud red lippie, so next on my list is a loud pink. :D
I love lipsticks! Peachy shade for work, and loud pink or bloody red for a night out with my girl friends.. I like Avon's lipstick in Guava.. For me its the perfect everyday lipstick.. :)
JUDGEMENTAL FRIENDSSSSS.... heck yeah.
I always get weird looks from them when I try a more than natural lip color. >.< ANd it's so sad that I want to wear pinks but my lips are super pigmented, so ugly ang labas. :(
I like the super red one at the top. :O And all the girls at the bottom. :D
Thanks for the tips! Confidence-booster for the day., :D
Great tips! :) I actually just started wearing red lipstick last year. Before that, I can't even wear any lipstick at all! Yung lips ko parang naiinitan pag ng lipstick ako.haha But now, I'm more comfortable wearing red lipstick. I do apply a lip liner of the same color. I find it easier and the color stays last longer. I will try more bold colors next time. I'm definitely going to try the Avon lipstick.
