Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Color in Calypso
Thursday, January 3, 2013 at 9:20AM The big makeup trend for 2013 is brite n' matte lips. Pinks, reds, plums - all matte and all opaque. I think this trend is something everyone can jump into because it requires minimal skill to pull off. Plus, it would look good on just about any set of features and complexions! Loud lips are also a good excuse for girls who don't want to wear much makeup, as they require only a flawless base, some mascara, and polished brows to look modern and ultra-cool.

The Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Color (P1,350), released last quarter, is something you should look into if you like matte lipsticks. The formula is opaque in one layer, doesn't transfer, and lasts over six hours even with eating and drinking. It is dry, as expected from matte lipsticks, but it doesn't flake compared to its drugstore counterparts.

Creamy Matte glides on nicely even with the dry texture. I don't wear a lip balm under it if my lips are in prime condition, but if they're dry, I just apply a very thin layer. I allow the balm get absorbed for a few minutes before wiping it off so as not to mess with the formula of the lipstick. Tip: the more lip balm you leave under matte lipsticks, the more they are inclined to slide off. Kinda defeats the purpose, IMHO! You have to experiment with the right ratio per lipstick.

Calypso is described as a pink coral in the website, but I think that definition needs to be expanded. It's a hot, bright pink that has an intense, coral red note. Very attention-grabbing! I would normally wear this with almost bare eyes, but since I wanted to photograph other products for review, I had on smoky purple makeup. It's not something I would recommend for day wear. :P

Phone picture, hence the grainy finish

Plus points: the Creamy Matte Lip Color doesn't have a scent, does not dehydrate lips (don't you just hate the feeling of sore lips after wearing matte lipstick?), and comes in a glossy, hefty bullet that feels posh.
Minus points: enhances fine lines and flakes if you have any, so you have to make sure your lips look good first before wearing it.

Overall, the Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Color is great to try if you're looking for a matte lipstick that you can rely on. There are trendy brights in the 12-color collection, but there are also wearable everyday shades if that's what you're into. Its best feature is perhaps the longwearing, non-drying texture. Love it!

Thoughts? ;)

this is pricey but above all I think it would make my lips long last.
thanks for sharing Ms. Liz.:)
Not into matte lipstick though, it adds to my already-dry lips
Calypso is super pretty! though it's pricey, I think it's worth it if it doesn't flake like you mentioned. I do love matte lipsticks and most of my matte lipsticks are from Revlon. and Yes, it does flake after a couple of hours wearing it, so I have to keep replying it cover the cracks. If I plan to wear a matte lipstick, I usually include my lips while I brush my tooth, instant lip scrub...hehe then apply a thin layer of lip balm for a few minutes, then wipe it off. Then I apply a lip liner as base, to make it last longer. ^_^
Definitely interested in Crushed Plum! How would you say these compare to the Shu Uemura matte lipsticks? :)
This color reminds me of MAC Impassioned :)
@Hollie thanks for the awesome tip! i do the toothbrush thing too!
@Mariana Shu Uemura has a diff texture! Same level of opacity but Shu is silicone-based so it has more slip, therefore more prone to slide off. It lasts long naman but Bobbi beats it because the formula really sinks in.
Maybe it's also because of the Shu color I got - medyo pale pink so it wouldnt really leave a deep stain. I'm sure the matte red and pink from Shu would though! They're intense
Aw I can't pull matte lips cause my lips are already dry, and when I put on matte lipstick the skin of my lips can be shown, even when I wear a chapstick. :( But I've always loved matte lips! haha :D

Gaaaah! that Lip color looks very lovely, now I'm drooling over it. Kinda pricey, but if it's a matte lipstick that doesn't flake, I'll go for it!
That is such a pretty color! It doesn't look hot pink on my (iPhone) screen, more link deep coral pink, really girly. I can't pull off matte lipsticks, they make me look older. But this is gorgeous on you.
The color is absolutely gorgeous! Is the formula drier than MAC's Ruby Woo?
That's a very nice colour! Pink coral!! So pinky and cute! Fit for a simple look! Finding the right lipstick colour could really make you look elegant :)
its sooo pretty and very girly.. i love it though im not sure if it will suit my skintone :)
Looks great on you, Liz! Awesome review :D
It's such a beautiful shade.. Sigh. I swatched this the other day when I was feeling a little restless; I wanted to buy something but I wasn't sure what it was. I might end up going back for this, after all. Haha.
Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte in Coral is a nice shade but I am a fan of nude-colored lipsticks so I guess the one in Pale Peach is much better especially on day time. Anyway, I bet matte lipsticks will truly rock this year since they usually last longer and do not easily smudge.
I really love the color of the lipstick it is better if it will be wear on day time , It's Kinda Pricey but worth it naman. You cannot really say no to the brand.
Yay, I was waiting for you to review this! :) Could you do a tutorial on how to pull off the look in that creamy matte poster? (The first image in this blog entry) I want to do flushed cheeks and a bright lip but have no idea how to pull it off without looking like a clown. :(
p.s.
Really love your new header image!
This looks like it's worth the price. I like how it's not overly dry (as some matte lippies feel like erasers on the lips).
I kind of want to see you wearing Crushed Berry too!
I love the color! My problem though: I don't know how to match bright lip color with my blush. I just get so confused when I'm trying to pick what blush to wear with the bright lip I'm wearing. Especially, when I'm wearing a red lip.
My lips normally gets dry through out the day if I don't keep it moisturized. So even if it was smooth when I applied the lipstick, there's no guarantee that it will not flake unless the lipstick is hydrating or if I keep applying lip balm before it starts to flake.
A tip for those with flaky lips (before applying lipstick): take some lipbalm with a cotton bud and rub all the flaky skin off (gently of course). That is, if you don't own a lip exfoliator (something that you wouldn't need to rinse off with water).
Vavavoom lippie! I'll love it based from your review Ms. Liz. I think I need to do my quickest lip scrubbing which I've learned from Rae. Liquid lip balm with sugar, it is! :D Then apply this lippie. It costs the same as that of Shu Uemura lipstick, mon shu red that I bought. The packaging is elegant too. I think I'd like to try the Crushed Plum shade :)
Which do you prefer, this one or Shu Uemura's?
I really don't own any matte lipstick since my lips are very capable of drying out too much. But when I feel lwant to wear matte lipstick I just use my creme lipstick blot it, get one-ply of a tissue ( if it's a two or more ply kind), place that over my lips then lightly dust translucent powder over it then apply a thin layer of the lipstick over it et voila instant matte lipstick. :)
Of course i prep my lips before I apply my lipstick with a homemade lip scrub of brown/muscovado sugar and honey (1:2 ratio). :)
Matte lipsticks are really nice especially red ones, IMO. I think it makes red look more toned down so you can use them anywhere but at the same time, wearing red just makes you feel really classy ;) Plus it lasts a long time so you wouldn't be constantly re-applying it.
But matte lipsticks can be drying and hard to wear so to prep the lips, do a sugar lips scrub :D A little bit of olive oil with sugar to exfoliate the lips to make them nice and soft. Also, I think applying lip balm every night really helps the lips be smooth and moisturized - so I wouldn't have to wear lip balm in the day. :)
I admire Bobbi Brown as a make up brand and her products, albeit pricey, are definitely something I'd want to save up for!
PS. Can I just say that I love your new heading, so pretty and refreshing too! :)
I've been thinking about getting one of these actually, thanks for reviewing it!! I've been hovering over the Bobbi Brown counters at Rustans for over two weeks now, haha. But would you say that they're better than the Mac lipsticks (matte finishes)? And would you know how they compare to the NYX ones too? Thank you so much :)
The first photo somehow reminded me of Ever Bilena's Scarlet Red but when I scrolled down and saw your photos, boy was I wrong! It's quite lighter compared to the model's and It's quite steep so i guess i just have to stick to my good old matte lipstick; unless I find a counterpart of this. I usually apply some vaseline and leave it on for a couple of minutes to smooth-en my lips while priming my face so before putting on a lipstick may it be matte or not i gently wipe it off so my lips are now supple; that way the product wont easily slide off and it even stay longer plus always blot.
