Benefit They're Real Beyond Mascara

Nelly See, the owner of Pinkbox, is easily one of the most glamorous people I know personally. It's not the kind of glamour that's in-your-face; hers is very subtle, something that's obviously born from years of effortless practice. She carries Hermes as if it's a body part - not something to flaunt or even be remotely conscious about, which is as it should be!

I also love that's she's super kikay! Haha. One time, while at the office, she asked me to come over to her desk. "Look at my lashes Liz!", she said. I was like, "Whoa! They're super long! What did you use?"

"Benefit!" she said. Now I don't remember which mascara it was exactly, Bad Gal or They're Real, but my bet is on the latter. The Benefit They're Real Beyond Mascara (P1,200) promises to "reveal lashes you never knew you had". That's not quite off the mark but I think that They're Real focuses more on giving length rather than plushness. Really useful if you want an everyday mascara that can fool people into thinking they're real!

After using this for over a month, here are my thoughts on Benefit's star mascara!

What I love about the product

  • Lengthens lashes beautifully. It doesn't look fake as the tips are deceptively thin and pointed, mimicking natural hair. As far as I can tell, this mascara doesn't have microfibers (which are normally difficult to remove.)
  • Easy to take off with your normal makeup remover as it's not waterproof. Good news if you want a fuss-free mascara, bad news if you tend to cry a lot.

  • The wand doesn't poke my eyes as it's easy to maneuver. The spiky ball-like tip also helps to really extend the lashes when positioned upward.
  • Doesn't clump or look chunky.
  • Dries fairly fast on lashes, but not too fast that you don't have ample chance to build it up.
  • Beautiful packaging.

A step-by-step tutorial on how to correctly apply mascara using Benefit They're Real

What I don't like about the product

  • Not cheap at P1,200.
  • This doesn't hold the curl as well as I'd like.

If you're a girl who wants such great heights for your lashes while still keeping it stress-free come removal time, the Benefit They're Real Mascara is a great choice. It can fake natural long lashes as long as you apply it correctly. I would recommend it for average days out when you don't really need the grip of a thousand black holes on your lashes.

However, if you're after a volumizing and water-resistant mascara, there are other options.

Love it. It's a handy mascara to have around if you're a wear n' wash kind of girl. So, lemme know what you think in the comments! Have you tried They're Real yet? :)

I love what you are wearing on the 1st pic! It looks so glamorous. I'm kinda uncertain on buying a 1000+ mascara because I change it every 3 months.

Been wanting to try this out for some time now... but like you said, it's not cheap. I usually buy myself a new lipstick as a prize if I do something good. Maybe I'll switch out the lippie for this mascara next time. Such pretty packaging! :)

I love the wand applicator design! Also that this formula doesn't have all those fibers yet it can still do the lengthening job. Too bad this isn't waterproof and not cheap at all :( The waterproof bit is pretty critical for me. I'm sticking with Majolica Majorca's Lash King for now. Maybe if this becomes waterproof, I'll think about it. hehehe As usual, great product shots, Liz! :D

When Benefit arrived here in the Philippines, I was one of those who were really excited. I love their products, and the first one that I got was Cha Cha tint, while all the raves was about Benetint, I opted for an orangey glow which for me is more appealing. It was only recently that I began to like everything eye make up related and this looks like a mascara that I can really maximize. I do have one, but it's not really impressive, sure the first hours will give me the volume and length but after a while, it's back to normal. The price is kind of heavy but I think that if most of it's users claim that it does deliver what it promises, then it's worth a shot. :)

I tend to splurge on mascaras, and I don't know why. I currently have Smashbox Full Exposure, and I'm loving it. Maybe after the three months is up, I will purchase this one. Is it me or am I the only one who hasn't purchased anything from Benefit since their opening?

I have this one and its my current favorite mascara!

Does it hold the curl well?

July 26, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMandy

The effect of the mascara is really nice but it isn't going to be worth the money for me, unfortunately. It would smudge on my lower lids after a few hours (it's weird because I have short lashes and I curl them upward naman) which would make me look like a raccoon! D: Waterproof is the only way to go for me. I use Make Up For Ever :) Nonetheless, great review as always and great packaging on Benefit's part :)

P.S. I love your boss's bag and your outfit in the picture :D

Nice review! Does it hold a curl well though? I'm planning on getting this but my lashes can't hold a curl for the life of them. :(

Hey Denise! Edited my post to include my comments about the curl. IMHO it's not a curling mascara, it's more on lengthening and definition. I highly recommend the Shu Uemura Ultimate Natural Mascara (I think it's called), it's pricey though but when used with the Shu curler, my lashes are curled ALL day! Cheaper alternative would be the Max Factor False Lash Effect. Also curls super well too.
