Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy books were some of the most memorable ones I read when I was younger. They made me laugh, made me appreciate the beauty of a good mystery, and to look at things sideways. More importantly, HHG taught me the importance of a good towel and to not panic when faced with impossible situations. Well, this is a reminder for me to read the five books again! You should too if you haven't yet. ;)

But why am I blabbering about HHG? I'm here to talk about the Clinique Chubby Stick (P960)! These are hydrating tinted lip balms that come in a twisty crayon-shaped tube. It's the first brand, I think, which came out with such a fun way to package lip balm. The Chubby Sticks are actually similar to Clinique's Almost Lipsticks - the main difference is of course the packaging, and then the color selection. But they feel practically the same.

Here's a quick rundown + lip swatches!

What I love about the product

  • It feels thin and light (not waxy or sticky), yet it hydrates my lips for a good 2-3 hours. I don't get flaky lips when it fades away. I like how smooth my lips are even after it's all gone.
  • It's deceptively sheer but it can be layered to get a more intense color. It's still not going to look like lipstick but it will show up even over pigmented lips. Oh and it doesn't settle on the rims or catch in flaky parts of the lips.
  • Stays on after eating and drinking - it will fade, but you'll still feel the balm on your lips.
  • The deeper colors leave a nice stain.
  • Because of the shape of the bullet and product, it's easy to apply it anywhere - even without a mirror! It's hard to make a mistake with these.
  • No smell, no taste.

Oversized Orange is a sheer orange with fine gold shimmer. Very pretty and summer-ready!

Curvy Candy is a sweet warm pink. Great for light to light medium-skin.

Plumped Up Pink is (I think) a limited edition shade that Clinique released to celebrate Estee Lauder's campaign against breast cancer. It's warm, deep sheer pink.

Fuller Fig is a dark reddish brown that surprisingly looks lovely when worn. It looks a lot like Clinique's famous Black Honey!

Richer Raisin is much darker than fuller fig, and closer to a brown-plum. Not a shade for my skintone, but I think really dark girls will find this as a nice MLBB.

PS - the color doesn't settle on the rims of the lips. The post-processing on the photo just sort of did that.

What I don't like about the product

  • You would really need to work it in to get a nice thick layer of balm and color on your lips. It's best to warm it up first by melting the top layer on the back of your clean hand.
  • Expensive for a tinted lip balm.

Recommendations

If you like cute tinted balms in luscious colors and a hydrating formula, I'm sure you'll love the Clinique Chubby Sticks. One or two is great to have as a daily lip product since it's so hassle-free to apply! Don't expect it to last more than three hours though as that seems to be the limitation of most lip balms - doesn't matter if high end or low end. But I think you'll like the softening and smoothening effect on the lips.

I highly recommend it if you don't mind the splurge, but of course there are more affordable alternatives. :) Most people would try for the Revlon Balm Stains but please note these are completely different products. Revlon is closer to a lipstick in terms of color pay-off - very opaque - and a stain in terms of lasting power. The Cinique Chubby Sticks are lip balms that offer to keep lips nicely moisturized and naturally colored.

But if you're a color freak, I have great news! Clinique will be coming out with the Chubby Stick Intense next year. :D It's already out abroad I believe but it will be available in our local counters mid-year. That's quite a wait but with these swatches, it looks super worth it!

Verdict

Love it! It's a nice product to throw in my pocket or purse for causal days. I mean believe it or not, I don't fuss with makeup all the time. This is the perfect weekend lip color! I love to combine Oversized Orange and Curvy Pink for a cute coral pink shade. I also love Fuller Fig, which looks similar to Clinique's famous Black Honey Almost Lipstick.

Tata for now! Lemme know your fave tinted balms, and if you've tried the Chubby Sticks before!

They kind of look like Victoria's Secret Glossy Tint Lip Sheen.

I can not comment which one is better though, I have not tried Clinique's.
I love the ones from VS, but I might have to visit Clinique soon! Hee hee

Thank you for letting us know that the intense kind will be available next year pa. I keep asking the Clinique lady at Rockwell about it and I think she's sick of my face na. Hahaha! She just kept saying that she didn't know when they'd be available... but she should. Tsk.

@Mariana July daw! :D I'm hoping I can review the Intense early para magkaalaman na. Haha.

Hope you do a review of the Chubby Stick Intense when it becomes available here. Looking forward to it.

Thanks for this Liz. I was actually debating on a save vs. splurge with this two items. So glad you compared kasi I wanted sana a more opaque lip product and balm in one and I thought since Clinque was more expensive, it would have had more color pay off. Mali pala.

November 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAthena

These are kinda expensive for my taste. They're really not student budget friendly. I still prefer the cheaper alternatives- Revlon or Avon lipbalms/lipsticks. :D

November 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNikki

Revlon all the way, if you want intense colour theres a shade fr that but if you prefer the lighter colour theres also a shade for that :)

November 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterViel

I have this in plumped up pink, i love its pink color, its not the look-at-me kinda pink. And I like Clinique's formulation than Revlon.

The colors are cute but they're very expensive for tinted lip balm... But I like it that they are moisturizing. I have very dry flaky lips :( Actually, I was considering buying this until I saw Revlon Sweetheart on you. It's so gorgeous! I'm torn. Haha.

Thanks for this post Ms. Liz.

I thought Revlon Kissable Balm Stain is the save version of the Clinique Chubby Stick. Thanks for the brief but concise comparison of the two.

I love H2G2! It resonates with me so much. I was such a fangirl, I wrote a Philo paper on it. *facepalm* Although this pales in comparison to my friend in Germany, who of course brought a towel to the screening of the movie.

November 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEula

Revlon's lip butters might be more economical than these cute little crayon glosses. But this might be worth a try. TIP: Revlon now has an ongoing sale in ALL lipsticks till end of November. (Well except lip stains.)

November 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterManilaJen

I agree that this looks sheer compared to Revlon's Balm Stains. Explains why more people prefer Revlon's. Add to that that the latter's way cheaper (btw, I know of an online shop that sells 3 [authentic] Revlon Balm Stains for only PhP 1100, you save more if you buy 5 but I can't remember how much that would be).

This is the first time I've stumbled upon someone mixing differently colored lip products. Makeup newbie here, haha. I'm only familiar with using the same colored lip gloss over lipstick, and ombre-fied lip color. Will this still work with pigmented lip products?

P.S. Will be adding HHG on the list of my to-read books! :)

November 23, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJas

ooh, are these the new colors? I got myself two-ton tomato as a treat (a sort of "impulse" buy after a really crappy week at work) and I'm loving it so far :) It's this really nice orange-red shade that kind of makes my teeth look whiter.

PS. Have you read the Dirk Gently series too? There's a BBC series on it now :)

November 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterapril

Maybe you could compare this with revlon's own version?

November 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteranabonika

medyo pricey siya for me.. Hence I trust Clinique product talaga. :) but I guess the revlon are the dupes for it.. I'll go ahead and try this on the counters.

Thanks !

November 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEyah

I like that this product is so easy to apply even without a mirror. But the color payoff is really very subtle. It's perfect for lazy days. ^_^

November 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMaris

Looking forward the intense line so we an compare it to Revlon's. >:)

November 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPearl

I would like to try this Clinique Chubby Stick, I like the look it gives. Especially the Oversized Orange, it gives you the aura that you have put something on but not too much, it just look natural.

November 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterQuimz

My sister-in-law just gave me one a few days ago and I'm loving it. :)

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLizzie

Ah! I was looking at these the other day. Haha might have to pick some up for myself :p

November 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterCarina

i think i like the revlon more since the color pay-off is better and this is quite pricey for a lip balm purpose. Maybe after i have expanded my make -up stash, i would be reaching for this. Covergirl i think is launching a similar lip balm stick, in the US this November, which also has sheer color pay-off as the chubby stick with a lesser price-point.
thanks Liz for the quick comparison
