A Softer Side of Matte? Trying Out Bobbi Brown’s Luxe Cashmere Matte Lipstick

Lip product releases always excite me, as there’s just something about a fresh tube of lipstick that feels like a little luxury. So when I heard about the new Bobbi Brown Luxe Cashmere Matte Lipstick, I knew I had to try it. It’s being touted as “the softer side of matte,” promising a non-drying, comfortable finish. Naturally, that caught my attention. I’ve been firmly in my glossy lips era lately, favoring balmy textures and juicy finishes, but I was curious to see if this new formula could tempt me back to the matte side. Would it deliver that chic, blurred look without sacrificing comfort? I had to find out.

The Bobbi Brown Luxe Cashmere Matte Lipstick (P2,550 for 3.5g) comes housed in sleek black and gold packaging, adorned with the Bobbi Brown crest. It’s a chic, elegant touch that carries over to the lipstick itself—I almost didn’t want to use it because it looked so pristine and luxurious straight out of the box. The finish is described as a soft matte, achieved through blurring polymers that diffuse the pigment for a more natural, lived-in look. It’s also said to be lightweight and lip-enhancing, thanks to the addition of a hydrating Yellow Flower Complex.

I got to try two shades from the launch event: Espresso and Rosy. At first glance, they looked quite intense in the bullet - almost intimidating - but they swatched and wore much softer than expected. You can apply the lipstick straight from the tube for full pigment, layer it for extra depth, or pat it on with your finger for that trendy, blurred-lip effect. One pro tip I picked up from makeup artist Muriel Vega Perez during his demo at the launch: pair the Luxe Cashmere Matte Lipstick with the Bobbi Brown Lip Pencil (P2,050). Using the pencil on top helps define the lips more precisely, perfect for nailing that crisp shape or achieving the ever-popular overdrawn lip look.

Espresso is described as a “rich auburn brown,” and it immediately gave me strong ‘90s brown lip vibes, so fans of that era will definitely appreciate this throwback shade. Personally, it’s a little too deep and warm for my everyday wear, since I usually gravitate toward pinks and reds. I also noticed that this shade feels a bit harder to apply compared to the other one because it drags slightly on the lips, which makes it trickier to get an even swipe. I find it works best when patted on with a finger; it gives this gorgeous, burnt-out yet subtly blushing effect that’s much easier to wear. When I pair it with the Bobbi Brown Lip Pencil in Afternoon Tea - a warm bricky brown - the combo brings on a wave of nostalgia.

On the other hand, it was love at first swipe with the shade Rosy. It’s supposed to be “a medium brick pink,” but on my lips, it leans red, which I absolutely adore. I’ve taken to wearing it for events where I know I’ll be photographed, as the shade has just the right amount of intensity and warmth for me as a neutral-leaning cool. When I pair it with the Lip Pencil in Ruby, which is described as “a deep neutral red,” I think I may have just found my new red lip combo.

So did the new Bobbi Brown Luxe Cashmere Matte Lipstick bring me back to wearing matte? Well, the shade Rosy sure did! Given the difference in application with the two shades I got, it would be best to swatch them in person especially if you’re going for the deeper shades. As for the Lip Pencils, I have nothing but praise. They glide on well and blur out nicely if desired. The shade Ruby in particular has converted me onto lip liners. I honestly want to break it in half just so I’ll have two pieces, one for my vanity and one to always bring around. Do let me know if the shade comes in a mini!
