Monday Musings: When Is It Too Late To Start Again?

We had such a wonderful Project Vanity event over the weekend with NARS, and as expected, it was a lovely afternoon filled with makeup tips from professional makeup artist Rosh Hemlani (thank you, Rosh!). Of course, there were samples too, that’s always a crowd favorite! It’s actually been a while since we hosted a makeup event, and I forgot just how fun it is to explore new techniques and reconnect with fellow beauty enthusiasts. Now I’m wondering: should we do more of these? I think so.

A little before the event officially started, I had a conversation that really stayed with me. One of the attendees approached me and mentioned that something I said at a previous event resonated with her: it’s never too late to start again.

She shared that between work and taking care of her kids, she often feels like there’s barely any time left for herself, especially for the little joys like makeup. She came to the event hoping to reconnect with something she used to love, and to spark that sense of self again.

Her words really touched me, because I could relate so deeply.

Having been in the beauty industry for 17 years now, I’ve had to reinvent myself countless times, both professionally and personally. And let me tell you, it’s never easy… but it does get easier with each new phase. Over the years, I’ve learned a few things that always help me when I’m starting over, whether it’s with a new project, a shift in career, or simply picking up an old passion again.

Here are three reminders I always hold close:

1. Everything I’ve experienced contributes to who I am now.
Even the failures - especially the failures. Every lesson, every challenge has shaped me and prepared me for what’s next. Nothing is wasted. The worst moments exist so I know how much better I can do and what it is exactly that I need to work on. I like to think that we never really start from zero. There are layers upon layers of experiences within us that has taught us some valuable things to cope with what life throws at us.

2. I know I can do this because I’ve done it before.
When self-doubt creeps in (as it always does), I remind myself that I’ve succeeded in the past more than I’ve actually failed. There’s no reason I can’t do it again, unless I listen to the self-defeating voices in my head. And they’re there, oh gosh, I can’t seem to shake them even with all my confidence and self-assurance. But what I’ve learned is that I can choose what to believe. Out of all the shitty things I know about myself, I choose to believe in my talent, my drive, and my experience.

3. I’m never truly alone.
It’s so important to lean on the people who love and support us. We don’t always have to do everything by ourselves. In fact, all of my biggest accomplishments happened with the help of others. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to receive it. We don’t have to be strong 100% of the time because it’s impossible and it’s unhealthy! Trust others so you can trust yourself too.

So if you’re standing at the edge of something new, or maybe picking up something you loved but set aside, remember this: it’s never too late to start again. You are allowed to evolve. You are allowed to be a beginner, no matter your age or stage in life. Every version of yourself brings wisdom and strength into the next. And who knows? This might just be the most beautiful chapter yet.
