Hairstylist Renz Pangilinan shares 3 tips on how to have salon-level hair at home

This story is brought to you by Pantene.

How’s your 2021 going so far? If you haven’t already, you need to get your hair off its artfully disheveled look and give yourself a salontastic hair transformation! We previously showed you some celeb-approved hair styles that you can try for yourself at home. But in order to nail these hair trends of 2021, it’s important to have salon-worthy smooth hair first. Celebrity hair stylist Renz Pangilinan, who has worked on the hair of Gabbi Garcia, Ivana Alawi and Kylie Versoza, shares three steps to get salon hair at home:

Step 1: Cleanse your hair the right way

This is an obvious tip but can be taken for granted. We have to keep our hair clean before anything else. However, be sure to cleanse your hair the right way. Here’s how to clean your hair effectively:

  • Wet your hair using warm (not hot) water to open up the hair cuticle. This will allow all the hair products to penetrate deeper and work better.

  • Make sure that every strand of your hair is soaking wet before you apply shampoo. It takes about a full minute standing under the shower head to drench your whole head.

  • Apply shampoo on your scalp and the upper part of your hair only to remove oil and dirt. Massage your scalp gently to remove all the buildup on your hair.

It’s important to use the right kind of shampoo as the first step to achieving salon hair at home. Look for shampoos that are gentle as well as moisturizing. Renz recommends, “I love Pantene’s Total Damage Care Long Hair Solutions Shampoo with Rice Oil Essence because it can fix hair damage, split ends, and give your hair overall damage prevention.”

Step 2: Maximize your hair conditioner

This is also crucial in getting that salon-level smooth hair at home. Here’s how to get the best results from your hair conditioner:

  • Use hair conditioner only from the middle part of your hair until the ends. Applying it too close to the scalp can possibly weigh down the hair and cause it to lose volume.

  • Make sure that your hair conditioner is distributed evenly and every strand is coated. A great way to do that is to run a wide-toothed comb from the middle part of your hair all the way to the ends.

  • Rinse your hair with cold water to close the hair cuticle. Closed cuticles are flat and will result in smoother hair.

The best conditioners have nourishing and moisturizing ingredients like collagen and keratin. Renz recommends, “I love the Pantene Collagen Miracle Intensive Serum Conditioner because it has REAL collagen. We’ve heard about collagen for skin care before, right? And now Pantene has brought an ingredient that has done wonders for the skin to a hair conditioner. Pantene Collagen Miracle Intensive Serum Conditioner is a blend of real collagen and Pro-Vitamin B5 so that your hair stays strong, moisturized and salon-level smooth.”

Renz adds, “Another hair conditioner I love is Pantene Keratin Straight Conditioner. It contains a unique blend of Pantene’s legendary Pro-Vitamin B5 and keratin strengtheners to reduce frizz and get that salontastic sleek, straight hair look.”

Step 3: Give your hair extra TLC with a hair treatment

So our hair tends to lose its smoothness and become frizzy as it gets exposed to different conditions throughout the day. Our hair conditioner needs some help, and a hair treatment will give that extra boost. Here’s how to make the most out of your hair treatment:

  • After rinsing your hair conditioner, apply your hair treatment and leave it on for a few minutes.

  • Just like your hair conditioner, make sure that you all your strands are coated evenly from the middle part until the ends. Use a hot steamed towel or a shower cap to add some heat, which can help the hair absorb products better.

  • Seal your treatment with a cold rinse as the last step.

Renz recommends, “For extra smooth hair that looks like we got a salon treatment, we need to use Pantene Collagen Miracle Treatment Shots as a hair treatment every week. When you use it together with a nourishing hair conditioner like a Pantene conditioner, you’ll have fragrant, smooth hair that lasts all day.”
