Rave: Selsun Blue is your dandruff’s highly-effective nemesis

I’ve been suffering from dandruff since my early 20s. I’ve written here a few times about how I always rotate anti-dandruff shampoo in my hair care routine because without it, my scalp would turn into a flaky, itchy mess! It gets even worse when I’m stressed out. Sometimes, when I can’t stop scratching, my scalp would get small wounds already. Gross but it is the unglamorous truth to my super sensitive scalp.

I first heard about Selsun Blue from a friend. Her daughter’s dermatologist recommended Selsun Blue because she was also suffering from dandruff, and my friend was asking me if I’d heard about it. I haven’t! I’m super cautious trying out new hair care products because not only will my scalp react badly, my face also erupts in pimples if I use the wrong thing.

So, the Selsun Blue press kit which I received some months ago has just been sitting in my shelf unused. That is, until I got really super itchy dandruff a few weeks ago even though I’ve been using my regular anti-dandruff shampoo. I scratched it so it got worse pa! I thought ok, let’s try a new shampoo and see what happens. I went for the Selsun Blue Pro 2-in-1 Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for Normal Hair (P345 for 120ml at Lazada). It’s the one with the Honey Extract and is made to be moisturizing.

First off, this stuff has a strong, salon smell. You know what I mean! It’s not the most pleasant shampoo smell out there. The shampoo itself has this bright orangey color too. I wasn’t too hopeful, but I was determined. It has a thick texture and you need to work a bit to get it to lather, but it rinses off cleanly without residue. I leave it on for about 2-3 minutes to get its active ingredient, selenium sulfide, to work its magic.

Selsun Blue has 1% selenium sulfide, which fights irritation and itchiness while clearing away flakes. It doesn’t need a prescription, but it’s advised to use only twice a week, and then as needed once the dandruff clears.

Despite the mild unpleasantness of the formula, my hair felt soft and smooth after. Once it dried, I noticed also that it wasn’t dehydrated by the shampoo! And it had less frizz too. I did NOT expect my hair to feel soft after the shampoo! But I’m not complaining. I also did not break out.

Selsun Blue calmed down my scalp immediately. After my second use, my scalp is on its way to healing from the wounds and my flakes have gone away. I’ve been using it every few days since then - it just works! So yup, count me in as another one of Selsun Blue’s fans. It’s so good that I will be replacing my old anti-dandruff shampoo with it. It’s a bit expensive at P345 for only 120ml, but since it’s a treatment product you’re not really supposed to use it everyday. Worth it! I will definitely buy more.

Cool fact: Selsun Blue is made by Mentholatum, which also makes super good brands like Hada Labo, Lip Ice, and Sun Play. They really don’t mess around when it comes to formulation!

You can purchase Selsun Blue at Watsons stores and at the Mentholatum Flagship Store in Lazada.
