Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner

Feeling under fire today! Work has been non-stop since I woke up but I'm taking a break to write about an awesome eyeliner I got acquainted with recently. Now I've seen a lot of raves about the Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner (P449), but I didn't jump into the bandwagon because I already have the MAC Fluidline. That's the best gel eyeliner for me! Can the Maybelline one compare?

It's a nice, more affordable alternative, but it's not quite like the Fluidline in terms of pigmentation and texture. As for the lasting power - whoa! The Maybelline one will not smudge, smear, or fade even if you wear it all day. You can rely on it to look fantastic from the time you leave your house up to the second you wash it off.

You might be wondering why the packaging is different. Well, it's because this is the reformulated version that was just recently released. :) Here's a quick rundown!

What I love the product

  • It's incredibly long-lasting. I will not attempt to wear it for 36 hours but I've worn it 10 ten hours at most and it stayed fresh. It didn't smudge, smear, fade, or slip on my upper lids.
  • Decent pigmentation. It's solid in one line as long as the brush is properly loaded with a generous amount of product.
  • Oh, the brush. I love it! It's the right size and shape, has soft hair, and is stiff at the base while pliant at the ends. It's easy to use on all eye shapes and comes with a cap too.

  • The formula is smooth and glides easily on the lids. Doesn't streak or skid.
  • Super affordable! The quality is pretty good for the price.

Brown is a mid-brown with fine gold shimmer. It's not obvious unless you look with a magnifying glass.

What I don't like aout the product

  • Fades when worn on the waterline. But at least it doesn't turn into a smudgy mess.
  • You have to use a generous amount of product to get an opaque line in one go. Well, maybe I'm just used to the Fluidline.

Left is Maybelline Gel Liner in Brown while on the right is MAC Fluidline in Dipdown. I used a generous amount of the first liner to be able to draw those few lines; I used only a tiny smidgen of Fluidline to get that many lines. The Fluidline is considerably more pigmented and smooth, as you can see, but Maybelline puts up a good fight.

Well, that's why it costs a tidy P1,100

Recommendations

I highly recommend the Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner to anyone who needs a long-lasting, reliable eyeliner at an affordable price. It comes with a fantastic brush that will save you the hassle of shopping for a new one (if it's your first gel liner), and it's super nice to use too. I'm definitely keeping this brush around.

You probably already have a black eyeliner, so try Brown next time! It prettifies and sort of brightens the eyes (it's the fine bronzy shimmer in it) - an excellent pick for a natural daytime look.

Verdict

It's always great to find a good drugstore product that's worth more than what you pay for it. I still think that the MAC Fluidline is better than the Maybelline Gel Liner, but if you're on a budget, the latter is a purchase you won't regret. :)

Tried this yet? How does it compare to your other gel eyeliners?

I have the black one! I have to agree, it's the only liner that resisted to oil and sweat! Although you have to use a generous amount to get the amount of color that you like. Still, for the price, it's worth it. And it good to use for practice. It's another great find from Maybelline. I'll be trying the brown one next time. Seems to give of a warmer, soft look.

I like the Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Liner but mine got dried up in less than a month. kkk~ >_<
I'm not really sure if it's the product or it's the way I have stored it. I love the consistency though! It's very easy to glide. Anyway, have you tried the Tony Moly Gel liner? It's one of the most amazing cheap gel liners I have tried! <3

Bago na pala yung packaging? I love this gel liner din but I find the old packaging po more aesthetically pleasing.

Oh, I've been waiting for you to review this since I saw you mention it on Instagram! Sounds promising! Yes, I do already have a black eyeliner, quite a few! So a brown one would be a good change. I feel that black eyeliner makes me look too mataray. I've been saving up for the fluidline but maybe I'll give this a try first! I bought a Fanny Serrano gel liner before and it worked okay but completely dried out after just a month! I hope this one has a longer life! Thanks Ms. Liz!

I still have my old jar of this, haha! It's my emergency go-to liner when I run out of MAC. Just really don't like how it smudges all over my lids and waterline when I use it. :( My double lids must be pretty intense because my upper lash line reaches up to my upper lids when I keep my eyes open. But besides that, the staying power is pretty good and the price is good for the quality! :)

I've been using Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel liner for 4 yrs now and it never failed me plus it comes with a brush too and though I have MAC fluidline i find myself reaching for this more often since mac fluidline is way too expensive. I've been using black liner ever since would love to try brown for a change. Just wondering why different packaging? Is this available locally?

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBianca

The old formula was my first gel liner! Loved it to bits. I still have a some left but will definitely buy the new one when I've run out. That or try the Fluidline if/when my budget permits. Haha. Oh and I like to store this - along with my cream eyeshadows and my lone BB pot rouge - upside down; it helps the product to NOT dry up. :]

i tried the black one and so far it's fine with me..and i like the brush that comes with it. hmmm i should try the mac fluidline, i wonder why i never get to try it ..it's a very nice review..

i'm still a newbie when it comes to brown eyeliner.. well for a change i would try it.. i hope i can pull it off and i think i would also try a a different shade of lipstick and eye shadows too..

thanks ms.Liz for the post

You draw that cat-eye really well! Great review on the gel liner. I personally don't use them on jobs because I work better with cake liners, but there's not reason not to master gels. I haven't a black gel liner that's really black...

I have it in black but it's sorta dried na. I'm using San San brown gel liner and it does a decent job at its price. I got it for 100 during their sale. I'd try ELF's cream liner in brown next because I heard it's good.

Ms. Liz and ladies have you tried Fanny Serrano's?

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJanine

I've seen this in stores but never really bought. Good to know that its an awesome product. Will most probably get this next time!

I'm still a little timid when it comes to eyeliner. I'm still only comfortable with pencil liners, as I had a pretty bad experience with liquid liners. Maybe gel liner is the next step, and this Maybelline liner looks really good. I prefer brown liners as it seems less mataray.

This is it! The one on your instagram photo :D It looks nice. I've been looking for a good brown liner for everyday use and this is just perfect and very affordable. It looks good on you! Great review as always.

@Janine - I have Fanny Serrano in Black but haven't used it yet :D Will let you know :)

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterGenzel

Hi guys! Hope mine doesn't dry up agad! Maybe because it's stored kasi in plastic lang. The Fluidline is in a glass jar with a tight ceramic cap so it keeps for years.

I love drugstore products! I don't have a gel eyeliner yet but I'm hunting for one. I'll keep this review in mind. When the time to shop for a gel eyeliner comes, I'll test this Maybelline Lasting Drama and the ones from Tony Moly and San San which Andy and Janine mentioned.

@Sara That's an interesting storage technique. I'll try that.

I had an officemate who had maybelline eyeliner (the older version of this) on every single day. Even during badminton sessions. So the staying power of this is really amazing. As for me, eyeliners are a challenge for me. I love the way my eyes look when i apply eyeliner but i haven't mastered the art of a clean line in one swoop. The good quality brush plus the nice brown color intrigues me about this product though. :)

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdianecapile

I have both. Gel liners are perfect if you're always on the go! Fluidline's creamier and well pigmented so you don't need that much product to line your eyes. I've had it w/ me for 2 1/2 years now! I use brown liners for most days (I like using crayon kohl and powder liners too cos of their versatility-- not so much for staying power). And I have to agree w/ you; the brush is love, no? Great review as always! :)

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKhristine

You make a very good cat eye! Ang hirap to draw it straight like that. I have Tony Moly's gel liner. Its quite pigmented and stays put too. Is it true that dried up gel liners can be microwaved to restore to normal consistency? Has anyone ever came across this or has done so?

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterManilaJen

I heard the Maybelline brush is good.
I've only used (still using) the Tony Moly Backstage gel liner. I've had it since Sept 2011 and it has not dried at all!
I store it upside down since day 1 if that makes sense. I don't know where I got that idea but if anyone out there wants to avoid the drying issue(I'm sure we all do) then try storing it upside down.

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPong

Is this a new packaging? I have the black one but it looked different from this. I have super oily lids and this does not last at all. I really need an eye primer before I use any makeup...

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterSheng

Great review! It makes me want to run to the nearest store. :( I've been doing this thing na I wear gel liner, smudge it, tapos top with an eyeshadow of the same color using an angled brush. I can't perfect that line kasi, so I play safe and keep it soft. Plus it makes my boy lashes look decent! Ang ganda pala ng brown liner. Pwede siya for those pa-virgin looks.

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPaulina

You really do line your eyes pretty well, and galing in the pictures that you have posted here and before. Tuwing its about eyeliners ang post I cant help but stare at the pictures of you with perfect cat's eye drawn. Nakakainggit talaga because I still do not have mastery of this skills, kahit with super practice.
Oh, thanks for the tip in storing it upside down, tho those who mentioned this. Magawa nga.

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercouchpotato_md

Ms.Liz, on the second to the last picture of you, may I ask what lipstick and eyeshadow are you wearing? Ang ganda ng combination with the brown gel liner, subtle but really nice!

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercouchpotato_md

Love, love, love this! :) One of the best drugstore products imho. :)

February 8, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJin

I'm currently using Etude House's gel liner. First gel liner that I've tried since I'm a liquid liner girl before. It smudges though in the waterline, which is where I mostly apply liner on. I was supposed to buy Kanebo Kate gel eyeliner that you've recommended before. I think it's discontinued? At least that's what the sales lady said.
