Tutorial: How to make bottom lashes look naturally thicker

I'm sure bottom lashes are pretty low in your list of priorities when there are evil zits, violent eyebrows, and spiteful scars to fight. Still, a bit of work on those small, maybe invisible hairs on your lower lid can do wonders in opening up your eyes! You will also end up with a sexier, movie star gaze. ;)

I for one have almost non-existent bottom lashes because they seem to always break off all the time. They're sparse enough to begin with, dammit. However, what nature did not gift us, makeup shall conjure!

This tutorial will show you how to fake thicker bottom lashes without using obvious falsies or a straight line there. It's pretty easy to do although you would need a little practice (as with everything really) to get a nice clean finish. Here goes!

Step 1: You will need a long-wearing, preferably water resistant brown eyeliner to draw a combination of small dots and fine hairs on the root of the bottom lashes. If you have a pigmented brown eyeshadow or pencil eyeliner, that will do too. I prefer the liquid though because it's more precise.

So yes, just dot on the roots of the lashes - never a straight line - and tiny small downward dashes to mimic hair. Again, the goal is to look as natural as possible so the end result should be a haze, with no obvious lines. The brown should look like the shadow your lashes will cast when there's a light source from above.

Should look like this!

Step 2: Apply a non-smudging, water-resistant mascara to thicken those lashes. You don't need to work it heavily as you would on the upper lashes because you just need a bit of definition there, not drama. Position the wand like so, then weave the wand left to right repeatedly until the lashes are sufficiently coated.

If you get mascara on your skin, just wipe it quickly with a cotton bud. Others would recommend a mascara guard but I think it'd be hard to manuever the wand with one.

And that's it really, nothing too complicated. :) If you already have a thick fringe of bottom lashes then good for you! Just use a mascara. But if you're like me with sparse and even missing bottom lashes, then this is a useful eye-opener. Get it. Ha ha.

Have a great Wednesday folks! I'm off to far-off Alabang today for a shoot ocular. Speaking of - if you know any kids who are cute, long-haired, and mestiza, hope you can let me know ASAP! I'm looking for models for a big Pinkbox photoshoot.

Hi Liz! For someone who wants to make their eyes look a bit smaller, do you still recommend putting on mascara both for the upper and lower lashes? IDK why pero feeling ko mas nagbbgay sya ng attention sa eyebags so it makes my eyes look more baggy, Is it just me or gnun tlga? Haha. Thanks!

I love what you did here! Subtle but definitely will warrant that don't-know-what-it-is-but-you-look-different... kind of... (good different) from people.:-) I personally don't do my lower lashes because I don't like cleaning up smudges but I would love to! That's why I'm on the lookout for a mascara guard (I just know I can't do my lower lashes without it). The thing is it has been out of stock for a long time in Style Quarter. I know Japan Home Center used to carry mascara guards but now I can't find them anymore. I didn't know what use they had before. Heehee.:-)

Thanks for sharing the dot technique. I don't have a brown eyeliner yet but I'll try this with my black one. I always line my eyes in block and I don't like how it looks heavy and intense (for daywear especially). Instead of opening up my eyes, it makes them look smaller. I think dotting would do the trick.:-)

Oh, and you look so F-R-E-S-H in these pictures! I hope they weren't taken early this morning because that would be unfair! Mornings equal Haggardo Versoza for me! No time to prep and always wishing for a little more sleep.:-( Anyways, you have a good day and good luck on the ocular!:-)

Ms. Liz, you look like a barbie in your picture at the end. I love how you teach us on how to make bottom lashes. Thanks

It's funny because everytime I put mascara in my bottom lashes, I get it smudged all over my undereye, hehe, I'll try your tip about lining it with a brown water resistant liner. It looks really subtle and natural and that's what I always aim for.

January 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPauline

Thanks for the tip Ms. Liz! I never know what to do with my lower lash line! It looks incomplete when I line my upper lid and leave my lower bare! Great tip!!

I'm still afraid to try putting mascara on my bottom lashes. One of these days, I'll summon up the courage, and I can refer back to this tutorial on that fateful day! :P

hi! this is a much needed tip for me, i have short upper lashes and almost none below. anyway, sent you an email too, hope you can check it soon!

OH! Loved this tutorial! I'll do this today. hehe

ahihihi ang galing!!! on days na sinisipag ako i actually use a mascara guard i got online to coat my bottom lashes. pero if you don't have it, the cardboard trick will also work. i have pretty thick lashes pag naka mascara cause im using a medication to lengthen it. it works naman kahi sa kilay na nakakalbo.

kaya lang normally late na ko for work so no time n ko for mascara pero pag special occasions, i also coat my botom lashes. my holy grail mascara is etude house proof 10 kasi it allows you to coat even the sparse bottom lashes

Great tip! I'm trying this tomorrow. The final look is a success because the mascara on your lower lashes reinforces the completeness of your eye makeup. Walang bitin effect. Thanks Liz, uncomplicated tutorials are always appreciated.

I learned of that dotting-your-lower-lash-line technique first from Lisa Elridge. It doesn't look as harsh as drawing a straight line and it does wonders! Great for the no-makeup makeup look. I don't know what mascara guards are, but youtube gurus just place plastic cards (like the phone reload cards) underneath the lashes to prevent mascara from getting on the skin.

Putting mascara on bottom lashes are the hardest part of doing eye make up so this is a really nifty trick, thanks so much~

Ang pretty pretty mo sa last photo, Ms. Liz! You look better and better in ur posts!

@Miz Eloise what medication are u using? :)

January 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoy Mari

I already have some mishaps on using mascara. The ones I'm using smudge up after a whole day of use, making my dark eyes already darker! But I'll try this tutorial once I have a decent mascara.

January 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterNina

Why mestiza? Why not morena?

January 23, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAviva

putting anything in my eye is always tricky because my eyes are sensitive and i tend to blink or my eyes water when i tinker with my eyelashes or waterline. Putting mascara on my upper lashes is already a chore on its own and i tend to smudge it because i blink most of the time.. But I'm afraid to put mascara on the lower lashes, but maybe i would practice with a mascaraguard or plastic card. thanks for this tutorial Ms. Liz

Mascara guard works! It's almost too easy especially on the bottom lashes. Got mine from Little Emily.

January 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJoyce

@joy marie: lumigan girl u use it like a regular eyeliner before going to be , read online muna ha for precautionary measures kasi they tend to make your eyes darker, pero ive ben using it for 1.5 years hindi naman ako mukhang sabog. it really does not lengthen pero kasi it inhibits your lashes from naturally falling out, in short humahaba ang buhay ng lashes mo. it's still dependent sa natural lash growth mo, kung fine lashes ka talaga, dont expect na magmukhang bumbay un lashes mo sa kapal,
if youre familiar wih the brand that brooke shields endorses called latisse, pareho lang un,

im planning of doing a review on my blog kaya lang wala pakong decent pictures (beautyholygrail.blogspot.com)

January 24, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermiz eloise

Thank you for these tips. This is what I actually need! I only use mascara for my lower lashes then. Maybe trying out with a brown eyeliner should do the trick.

January 24, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPrincess Julia

@miz eloise what eyelash medication are you using that u found effective? Please do share.

January 24, 2013 | Unregistered Commentercouchpotato_md

sa mga nagtatanogn ng eyelash medication - it's lumigan. use at your own risk ladies read online muna tocheck side effects , pero ive been using it for 1.5 years sometimes daily someitmes every other day, sometimes a month or 2 in between pag naubos na, ok pa naman ako ! it s an over the counter product lang no prescription needed- again use at your own risk i can say it has worked for me and my friend

January 25, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermiz eloise

@miz eloise Thanks for the info. I'm researching this.

January 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMaybelle

@miz eloise Agree with you in the caution use it at your own risk.
Lumigan is use as an anti-glaucoma medicine. One of the adverse effects is actually growth of eyelashes. Warning of caution though, it can decrease the eye pressure below normal if you have no current glaucoma or increase eye pressure. It can lead to accelerated cataract formation over the years or sudden retinal detachment which can lead to permanent visual loss. Problem with eye symptoms is that they could be very subtle at first to detect until the problem becomes bigger. Just google OCULAR HYPOTONY if you want to know possible adverse effects of a medicine that is use for lowering eye pressure in an otherwise normal eye.

Nice trick. Would really help me in balancing my upper and lower lashes when I want my upper lashes to be dramatic. We have similar lower lashes, but mine tends to "stick out" when I put mascara on it. It looks terrible (for me). But nobody seems to mind. I use the Avon Magnify mascara for that so one coat really magnifies how straight my lower lashes are.

I know two cute mestiza kids. One has long hair but the other has (almost) shoulder length hair. What age should they be?
