Kiehl's gets into retinol with their newest serum for mature skin

If you want to know how your skin is going to age, look at your mother and (if you’re still fortunate) your grandmother. That should tell you where your lines will form and where your skin will give way to gravity; it will inform you how time will likely shape your face. Do not recoil. Aging is not ugly. It is a process that we all have to go through! But that doesn’t mean that we should not take care of our skin and give up without trying. It’s fun to try and do things better, no?

Kiehl’s recently came up with yet another solution for our aging skin, and that’s with the use of retinol. Retinol has actually been around since the 80s but it’s not until recent years that its been popularized as an effective skin age management ingredient. Most people are still a bit cautious about it, but Kiehl’s stepped it up with a retinol formulation that it touted to be non-irritating even for first time users.

Let’s take a look at the latest from Kiehl’s!

The new product is the Kiehl’s Retinol Skin-Renewing Daily Micro-Dose Serum (P4,950 for 50ml at Lazada). It promises to improve firmness, reduce wrinkles, and refine skin texture without the irritation one would normally receive from retinol.

The instructions are to apply one pump in the morning and at night, before your regular moisturizer. I agree that it will layer well with other skincare products since it’s light and easily absorbed as a serum. It’s also fragrance-free. It’s designed to work with other Kiehl’s serums, like the Powerful Line-Reducing Concentrate, which features Vitamin C as its main active.

High up in the water-based ingredients list is niacinamide, which is an effective skin brightening and refining ingredient. Then we’ve got ceramides for calming and smoothing skin, and then we get to the retinol in the line. It doesn’t say the percentage of the retinol, but let me put my skincare formulator hat on and guess that it’s probably less than 1%. That’s why it is less likely to irritate skin even with daily use!

Still, I would recommend not to apply it in the day time. Retinol is best applied at night time and then sunscreen MUST be applied during the day. Remember, retinol hastens skin turnover so you need to protect yours skin thoroughly from the sun while this process is happening.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do avoid retinol, just to be cautious. Some studies have shown that this ingredient affects fetal development. So to be safe, doctors may recommend to skip retinol if you are a new mother.

Kiehl’s has more aging solutions with old favorites like the Super Multi-Corrective Eye Opening Serum and the Multi-Corrective Cream. Both don’t contain retinol, instead using sulfonic acid (an exfoliator) and hyaluronic acid to brighten and plump up skin. They work well with the new Micro-Dose Serum! They have a richer texture for dry or dry-combi skin types so expect them to be moisturizing.

And that’s it! Hope you found this informative! Let me know if you have any questions. Have you been using retinol in your skincare?
