Scented on a Budget: Trying the Blackwater Whimsical Deo Sprays

Product photography by Perkin Gotohio

Body sprays have always occupied an interesting space in the beauty routine - they’re affordable, convenient, and often overlooked. The Blackwater Women Deo Spray - Whimsical Collection (P 199 / 150 mL) presents itself as an accessible option for fragrance layering or quick refreshers throughout the day. With five distinct variants, the collection aims to offer a scent for every mood. Here's what I found after trying them all!

Whimsy

Whimsy opens with bright, fruity notes - orange, pineapple, strawberry - that immediately signal a youthful, upbeat direction. The heart introduces florals like jasmine and freesia, softened by peach and violet, and it dries down to a creamy coconut and musk. It’s cheerful, light, and will likely appeal to those who enjoy sweet, uncomplicated scents. It’s not particularly long-lasting, but it layers well over a lotion or body oil.

Spell

This one stands out as more structured. The blend of bergamot, pear, and blackcurrant offers a crisp opening, followed by a soft floral heart of iris, tuberose, and peony. It ends with a smooth, slightly warm base of sandalwood, amber, and musk. Spell has a slightly more mature feel compared to the rest. It’s still a body spray, but it tries to create the impression of a more refined fragrance.

Dream

Dream leans heavily into sweet territory. The top notes of orange, pear, and strawberry feel syrupy, but not overly synthetic. It transitions into violet and jasmine, before settling into a warm vanilla and amber base. It’s best for those who gravitate toward gourmand scents. This one has a bit more staying power, though it may feel a little heavy in very warm weather.

Wish

Fresh and clean, Wish is probably the most versatile of the five. It opens with green, citrus, and apple notes, giving it a crisp and airy feel. The floral heart is balanced and inoffensive, while the base of patchouli, musk, and peach gives it a mild warmth. It’s not polarizing, which makes it ideal as a day-to-day scent - especially for the office or school.

Lullaby

Lullaby is soft and subtle from the start. The plum and bamboo notes are mild, almost translucent, and the single-flower heart of heliotrope doesn’t push too far forward. Its base of vanilla and benzoin brings a light powdery sweetness. It’s a skin scent - close and comforting - but can be easily overpowered by other products, like a scented lotion or hair mist.

Overall

The Whimsical Collection is a good entry point into fragrance by way of being a deo spray, especially for those exploring scent preferences or looking for affordable options to rotate daily. They won’t replace a signature EDP, nor are they meant to. At P199, they offer value for casual wear, layering, or freshening up midday.

Spell and Wish stood out for their balance and wearability, while Dream and Whimsy cater to those who prefer sweeter, more playful scents. Lullaby is a quiet option that works best for winding down. Check them out!
