Five things you need to know when you're traveling with your beauty products abroad

Revenge travel is everyone’s favorite hobby at the moment now that the world has opened up post-pandemic. I’ve been on a couple of trips abroad myself this year and the energy at the airport is really different - people are more excited and at the same time more appreciative of the privilege to be able to travel to other countries once again.

Now, if you’re a veteran traveler, perhaps this article won’t be as useful to you, but if it’s your first time or haven’t traveled abroad in a while this is for you! Here are the top five things you need to know when you’re bringing your fave beauty products for your routine while you’re in another country.

You don’t have to bring your entire skin and makeup routine in your carry-on bag

There’s a well-known restriction about bringing liquids more than 100ml in your carry-on luggage. Anything beyond 100ml is not allowed, so keep this in mind when you pack your bag. However, this only applies to carry-on luggage; you can definitely bring a lot more liquid (although that’s not advisable) in your check-in luggage.

And so, unless you’re doing your full skincare routine in the three to five hours you’ll be in a plane for a short flight, you don’t really need to bring your skincare in your carry on. I never do, unless I’m going on a long haul flight!

BUT still decant your favorite products in 20 g/ml or 50ml containers

It’s important to conserve as much space as you can when you’re packing your beauty kit, so that you have room for all the shopping you’ll be doing! Besides, I don’t want to take the risk of a full-sized bottle leaking onto all my things in the luggage. Plus there’s always the chance that you might forget it in your hotel bathroom - que horror. My travel philosophy is bring only products you’re prepared to lose!

If you’ll be out for just less than a week, a 20 gram jar is fine for creams while a 50ml bottle is more than enough for liquids. I mean, unless you pour the stuff all over yourself! You can find bottles and jars in Shopee.

Always get the travel-sized or mini version of your favorite products when you can

The best way to travel with beauty products though is to find their travel-sized versions. Not only does the packaging look nice in your kit, I find that they’re so much more secure leak-wise! So always ask for GWP (gifts with purchase) from your favorite brands. Luxury beauty brands usually have this!

Most of the time, these are easily refillable, so all you need to do is open the cap and pour or spatula the products in. You can also use a syringe without a needle to transfer product.

I also love collecting mini makeup products since they’re a space saver.

Leaks will happen, so pack as if they will happen

Always place your bottles with liquids (shampoo, facial wash, toner, etc.) in a ziplock; never leave them just mixed in with the dry products. Even though the bottle or jar seems secure, you never know what will happen especially with the change in pressure inside the plane. By the way, obviously: never pack an aerosol can!

You can tape the caps but I find it such a hassle; what I do is, I leave a wad of tissue inside the ziplock bag to absorb any liquids that might spill. Then I just rinse the bottles afterwards and they’re good as new.

Take special care when packing decanted oils and contact lens solution. These in my experience always tend to leak! I know, weird about the contact lens solution. Sometimes I would even pack them in their own ziplock bag pa.

Your skincare and makeup kit are fragile - make sure there’s always a buffer around them

As much as possible, pack them dead center in your luggage. There must be clothes surrounding your kits in all directions. As you know, your check-in luggage gets thrown around mercilessly so the worst thing you can do is pack your fragile items on the sides, back, and front of your bag!

I’ve never had any of my powders break yet!
