Curlies, listen up: This is the BEST salon to get a haircut in Metro Manila if you have curly hair

When you’re born with naturally coily, curly or wavy hair like me, then you know the struggles of styling it. It really is one of the hardest things to master when you start learning how to take care of textured hair, am I right? Especially if you’re just starting out, it can get complicated and overwhelmingly messy.

And so it was such a thrill when I was finally able to book a haircut with Cutz and Curlz by Jazz’s hair salon! They offer quality haircuts and styling sessions for beginners taking care of curly hair, as well as long time CGM (Curly Girl Method) practitioners alike.

For those who’d like to read more about CGM, fellow PV writer Rae described CGM in a nutshell, great for beginners that you can quickly read here, and success stories like Carol’s when she finally learned to love her natural curls. Read about it here.

Now, contrary to this article’s title, Ms. Jazz’s salon practice isn’t completely new. She’s been a certified hairstylist since 2019 and a curly hair advocate practicing CGM for over six years now. The team just recently moved into a chic new salon last December 2022, in the heart of QC. The salon’s vibe is stylish, modern, and has cozy interiors. Not to mention, it is more spacious and can accommodate a lot more curlies than their previous place. Perfect for their growing family where Sir Orland, a popular hairdresser in the FB Curly Community, offers his services, and there’s also Ms. Mitzi who’s an apprentice to Ms. Jazz.

During my visit, I got an express cut, which is the most affordable service you can get. This starts at P350 which takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Getting an appointment is fairly simple, just by booking through their website’s appointment page and then paying a reservation fee to secure your slot. Love how there are detailed instructions on how to come into the salon prepped with dry cleansed curls, or with styled hair, depending on the service you’re going to avail. This makes the whole process quicker and more organized.

Every cut is designed to make your curls more voluminous and suit your face shape which is then styled to look more defined, shiny and healthy.

I wanted to try something new but personally didn’t get bangs since my face shape won’t suit a fringe and so it was my first time getting face framing pieces instead, and I loved how it turned out! My hair has never had this much volume and definition before, since regular hairdressers don’t know how to cut layers within my the curls to give it that shape. I’d say the quality of the specialized curly cut is well worth it.

A list of their services include:

  • The curly cut and style - from P1,200 to P1,800

  • Curly cut and color - from P2,500

  • Express cut - from P350 to P800

  • Express style -  from P500 to P1,200

Add-ons:

  • Curly hair treatment - ranges from P1,000 to P1,500

  • Home service (in selected areas)

I believe they’re starting to work on bridal hair styling recently, too. More options for curly brides-to-be, for those who opt to go natural on their big day!

Gone are the days when we, the curly haired minority, constantly had a hard time saying “no” to rebonding sessions, ironing, blow outs and straightening treatments at regular salons. I mean, go ahead if you want to, of course, but it’s pressuring sometimes when you’re faced with trained hair stylists slash marketing experts that push you to avail services you don’t even need. In Jazz’s salon, the curls are honored, glorified, and transformed.

If you want to start your healthy curly hair journey, and not sure where to begin, Jazz’s salon is a safe space where you can learn the basics on how to style the hair and maybe even get your big chop done to finally say goodbye to the rebonded ends of your hair.

To hit two birds with one stone, you can also shop for some CGA, or Curly Girl Approved, hair care products and tools in their salon after your cut, too! All of which are Ms. Jazz’s personal recommendations and so you don’t need to have a hard time finding the right products for your curls in many separate shops anymore. Imagine the struggle of reading all those tiny labels in-store, cross-checking each ingredient, whether or not they’re safe for our hair or not. Makes life much easier this way, if you ask me!

I bought some of their own formulations of CGA hair mousse and conditioner which are now staples during my wash day and styling routine. It makes me so happy that the selection of curly products are now expanding in the local market. I also got sectioning clips from local curly brand @curlico.ph and a jar of @cantubeauty gel, too, which is an international brand available at their salon.

If you want to get your curls transformed by Jazz too, you can find them on Instagram, @cutzandcurlzbyjazz, and their salon is located at Northridge Mansion in QC near SM North EDSA.
