Benefit Watt's Up! Highlighter: Champagne glow, achieved!

I think that a lot of Filipinas are wary of highlighting and illuminating products because these might make them look oilier than they already are. It's not like the weather is forgiving, no? Which may be why there's that semi-obsession with a matte face devoid of anything that remotely glows.

But I think that's an awful way to go about face makeup. Faking a glow is the best thing you can do for your face - it makes your skin look healthier, more natural, just a subtle leap ahead of ordinary and blah. Ever heard of the Benefit Watt's Up! Highlighter (P1,600)?

Before anything else, I would like to apologize for yet another Benefit rave. The brand gave me a bunch of stuff for free so you might think I am biased - but I get a bunch of stuff for free and I don't rave about all of them. So. With that out of the way, let's proceed to the review!

What I LOVE about the product:

  • This cream-to-powder higlighter is the perfect champagne shade that works with my skintone, plus it has no visible sparkles! It just looks like a fine sheen of light just happened on your skin. Soft-focus, indeed.

  • The stick form makes it super easy and quick to use. I just swipe it in the right areas and blend with my fingers. The other end has a pretty good sponge tip, but I only use it if I want to be precise about small spots like the upper lip and brow bones.

  • It stays put all day. It doesn't smear around so the highlighted places stay defined.
  • No breakouts.
  • Doesn't disturb the makeup underneath.
  • It's Benefit so it goes without saying - gorgeous packaging.

How I highlight - I always do the squiggles in white for basic highlighting. The ones in yellow, just once in a while when I want a super glowy face. I just want to emphasize the bones and planes of my face since I have chubby cheeks and a round shape! Blending is important!

Basic - do a C shape from the highest point of your brows to just a little under your eyes

Voila! Seamless but the glow is there.

What I don't like about the product

  • Frankly? Nothing I can think of.

  • Expensive at P1,600 but you do get 9.4 grams. Quite a lot.

If you find yourself suffering from dull skin and if you want to define your face more, the Benefit Watt's Up! Highlighter is an excellent solution. :) It won't make you look oily, plus its practically invisible unless the light hits it. I swear highlighting really makes a difference!

Tip: you can also use a bit of this under your eyes, on top of or mixed with concealer, to get an extra luminizing effect on your eyebags. You can also mix it with lipstick to lighten it and add a sheeny finish. :)

Love love it. Triple love it. You know I've actually had Watt's Up on my desk for a month before I started using it? I just didn't think I needed it, what with all the other luminizing products already in my routine. But when I took a moment to apply it, mostly out of curiousity, I was like, wow. Why didn't I use it sooner?

Watt's Up also looks excellent on bare skin. Sometimes when I go out I just use SPF, concealer, then Watt's Up and the results are pretty good. It's great. You must try it.

What do you think about Watt's Up? What brand of highlighter do you use, if you use one?

Hi Liz,

I'd lie if I say that this does not interest me. Like me, I have chubby cheeks and a very round face and lotsa times I wish that my face were a bit more elongated, I've read from several reviews and beauty columns that highlighters shapes your face, if this is true then I'm definitely splurging on this product!

You're not the only who raves about Benefit. After my purchase of the ever dependable Cha Cha Tint, I find myself dreaming about Erase Paste and Brow Zings. I just wish they also hold seasonal sale :)

Hey Iko! Contour + highlight is the way to go. :D Contouring recedes the chubby parts, highlighting brings out the sharp angles.

Benefit is amazing. Expensive but I guess it comes with the territory. I really need to get my hands on that eyeshadow primer one of these days.

That's really pretty! I agree with you Ms. Liz. Other highlighters looks bad on me. As if I had an oily face. I wonder if it has the same hue as Benefit's High beam? It really doesn't go well with my morena skin tone. :( So, I'm still in search for a pretty highlighter. I think cream type is much easier to use than the liquid ones.

@Miss_dibly - High Beam is a beige pink. It looked odd on me, too! but Watt's Up is a flattering champagne shade that will definitely work for morenas.

I love High Beam... so I have a hunch that I'll like this too! And it's in stick form! :) I used to wish that High Beam could have a version in stick form but I guess this is the answer!

February 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChex

HI Chex! High Beam is an entirely different color from this. This is better, IMHO! you really must try it.

love the glow! and the packaging is cute! well of course! it's from benefit! :)
anyway, is this available in other shades as well?
and what do you think about this and the other highlighters that benefit has?

I have high beam and I haven't been using it since it looks weird on me. The only highlighters I've tried that worked for me are ones in powder (or pressed) form. But I have to say that I'm really interested in this. It gave you a natural glow. :)

Hi liz!

I love the packaging! lol It looks really easy to use! I've been using NARS Copacabana but I might give this a go! I love your headband by the way ! so pretty :)

Hi Liz,

I'm wondering if u still recommend to use it even if I have an already oily face?

February 14, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRiaLity

@jen i don't think it has another shade! haven't tried other Benefit highlighters except High Beam, which I found too pink and light for my skin tone!

@teeneecruella thank you! that's a Pinkbox head band. :D

@riality hmmm. if you have a super oily t-zone area, you can skip applying this over your nose. just blend it on the upper lip (to define lips) and the sides of your face as i demonstrated above.

My eyes really brightened up upon reading your reply, Miss Liz! :) Thanks for the reply.. and for the heads up! :) I'm really relieved that I'm not the only person who ranted about their High beam. :P I'm NW25 and I think I'll be saving some for this highlighter. I'd also like to ask if you could share your fave contouring powder. Thanks sooooo much!

I love highlighting! But I always think I over do it because I use white highlighters. This looks better on Filipina skintone. :)

GORGEOUS~! IT LOOKS SO NATURAL!!! I will forever love Benefit's packaging design even though i don't own any of their products the naming scheme and design are just so appealing! OAO Also I hope you can do a highlights posts. I mean like compare and contrast different brands and textures. : O I would love to know you opinion on cream, liquid, and powder based highlighters.

I am inlove with Benefit's high beam. Will definitely gonna purchase this when I'm done with the High Beam. Thanks for sharing Liz! :)

Im a bit skeptical on using anything with glitter or shimmer on my face. It tends to get way too shiny. Especially since I have oily skin.
