Review: MAC’s Starring You Collection is all about that glittery bold look

MAC never fails to release daring Holiday Collections, and the Starring You for Holiday 2019 is no exception. Perfect for standing out with glittery pouts and galaxy eyes, the collection features eye, lip, lash, and cheek products that make you the star. I got to try some seriously majestic pieces which I’m excited to use here and there whenever I want to make an impact.

Kiss of Stars Lipstick in Starstruck

Starstruck is a full on purple-fucshia glitter lipstick. Gorgeous prints are embedded on the body of every Kiss of Stars Lipstick but the texture on the lips is that of a light creme without the slip. The fine glitter is smooth and there is little grittiness. There’s no need for flash in order to see the sparkliness — it’s just pure opulence.

What’s surprising is how even the payoff is in one swipe - there are no gaps. I simply “cleaned” the face to create a really even coloration with a medium coverage foundation (you can amp it up with Studio Fix Fluid if you need something full) and drew my brows. If you don’t have extensions, mascara will always make the look better.

This is not a liquid lip or a matte formula, so of course the color will fade gradually, but it won't bleed or slip from your lips. I found no need for a lip pencil. This lipstick is definitely getting me back into more striking looks.

Wear during cocktail parties but avoid oily food.

Lipglass in Starf*cker

MAC’s glosses are high impact “classic” formulas that have that tackiness. Starf*cker is a deep purple with fine shimmer, like a galaxy on the lip.

Those who are averse to the stickiness and non-opaque finishes can skip this one. However, if you like experimentation, this is awesome as a lip topper or even eye gloss.

Wear during performances, shoots, or when you want that va va voom!

Spellbinder Shadow

According to the MAC website, these loose pigments are “made of ionized, magnetically charged pigments that clings to lids like velvet with a rich, meteoric metallic finish”. When you dig into the pot, the pigments actually go back to their original shape when shaken! Super cool.

Stars Align on the sides and Stairs To The Stars on the middle

But what’s even cooler about the pigments is that there’s no need for a mixing medium for application. You can just use your fingers or brushes to apply them, and they still have that glittery impact. I was actually (star)struck by how glittery and starry these look in regular lighting when I first swatched them in-store.

You can even pat them on the lips and never feel any grittiness! Of course, these being pure pigments, they can fall out onto your cheeks if you’re not careful with application. They are also a little more difficult to blend than other formulas, so take note if you’re not used to blending. It’s tougher to blend with a brush, so I found that they worked and blended best using fingers. One pat of the pot is enough for the whole eye (although more is more) so no need to dig into it.

Wear during parties, dates, and any time you want your eyes to sparkle.

I’m surprised by how much I liked the “wild” colors and can’t wait to get out of my house to actually use them. The Spellbinder shadows are making it to the regular rotation, especially Stars to the Stars.

How are you incorporating glitter into your looks? Let’s discuss.
