Is the Laneige Neo Cushion Matte really mask-proof?

Now that wearing masks is a requirement when going out, I made it my mission to find the most “mask-proof” products I could find. While it’s rare to remove my mask once outside, there are some activities such as drinking water where I have to remove it temporarily. I want to still be able to enjoy my makeup sans the worry of having an uneven base from lifted foundation or a smeared lip that will leave my face covered with stains. So when I came across the Laneige Neo Cushion Matte with its transfer-proof promise, I knew I had to give it a try.

The Neo Cushion Foundation (P1,900 at Lazada) is Laneige's latest cushion compact launched last year. The compact case has a unique borderless design that is easy to grip and aesthetically pleasing. The refilling system inside was also made easier with a simple rotating motion and allows you to decide whether you want to open from left or right, a bonus for left-handed people.

Formula-wise, the Neo Cushion is the first cushion foundation in the market to be blue-light certified according to Laneige. Blue light speeds up skin aging so this is very timely since we now spend more time with our gadgets due to online learning and work from home setups.

There are two variants available for the Neo Cushion: the Neo Matte in mint green and the Neo Glow in millenial pink. I chose to get the Neo Matte because I wanted a formula that is long lasting and mask-proof. The Neo Matte is said to be able to cover pores and have a highly adhesive formula due to its ultra light powders. It also boasts of its transfer & sweat-resistant formula with its Humid Defense™ Technology.

Laneige recommends using a small amount to apply a thin layer by lightly dabbing onto the skin. Applying another thin layer will provide a higher coverage but warns that over application can result in a thick finish.

Review of shade 31N

My usual shade match for Laneige cushions is 31 and I’m happy to report that it remains the same for this new line. For reference, I wear Estee Lauder Double Wear in Rattan and RMS Beauty Uncoverup in 33. In the photo below, I’m wearing the Neo Cushion Matte in the right side of my face (your left). The left side of my face is bare. The cushion adequately covers my dark under eyes though if I really want to brighten up that area, I have to use a separate concealer. My pores are somewhat filled up and some redness also corrected.

Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with how it performs especially with how mask-proof it is. I thought it wasn’t working at first but I was using a really stretchy cloth mask at the time. If you’re using a surgical mask or similar ones, there’s minimal to zero transfer. It also lasts an entire work day, around 8 hours with just my t-zone oiling up at the 4-5 hours mark. I have to be careful with skin prep though as the matte formulation is unforgiving for dry skin.

I find that I have to load up on moisture if I want a healthy looking finish from the cushion. If my skin is a tad too dry, slight lines will appear around the nose and lips. The Neo Glow is probably a better match for dry skin but I haven’t tested out if it will be as mask-proof as the Neo Matte. As long as I do my skin prep well, the Neo Cushion Matte definitely earns its place in my mask-proof makeup kit.
