My love affair with Gel De La Mer

Do you know the story of La Mer? About fifty years ago, in 1965, an aerospace scientist named Dr. Max Huber suffered severe chemical burns on his hands and face due to an explosion in his lab. He couldn't find an existing way to heal his burns satisfactorily so he set out to create a cream to help his skin recover from the accident. He was fascinated by the restorative powers of kelp. After 12 years of experimentation, he came up with a bio-fermentation process that created the Miracle Broth, the ingredient at the center of every La Mer product.

The broth is a secret recipe of sea kelp, calcium, magnesium, potassium, lecithin, iron, Vitamins, C, E and B12, plus oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower. Those are basic ingredients, but what makes La Mer special is the way these ingredients are culled and combined. The kelp is actually only harvested (sustainably) twice a year in California and shipped to the other side of the US on ice to ferment in a vat for three to four months. The process also includes a sonic component - it is said that Dr. Huber used to play a tape of the sound of the kelp fermenting to every new batch.

Dr. Huber didn't invent the Creme De La Mer with commercial success in mind, but it was so effective that he started selling small quantities to everybody who has heard about it. Upon his death, his daughter sold the rights to the formula to Estee Lauder in 1995. Estee Lauder then developed several skincare lines and even cosmetics featuring the legendary Miracle Broth under the brand.

It's been fifty years since La Mer came to the world, and to celebrate this occasion the Creme De La Mer will come in a limited edition Amber Heritage Jar. It will only be available in the Philippines until the end of October, so I invite you to experience La Mer soon!

That said, I'd like to tell you about my new fave moisturizer: the Gel De La Mer. You know, as a beauty blogger, I try very hard not to fall in love with very expensive things. In the case of Gel De La Mer though it was a lost cause! This is more than a beautifully packaged, expensive moisturizer - it's seriously so good that my heart breaks a little inside everytime I scoop up a bit for my evening beauty ritual.

This is a gel-type moisturizer with a remarkable floral, powdery scent. It's considerably lighter in texture compared to the Creme De La Mer, so if you find that too heavy for your oily skin, the Gel De La Mer will hit the sweet spot. I've been using it almost every night for five weeks and I LOVE IT SO MUCH. It makes my skin so smooth and hydrated, "resetting" it in a way from the stresses of the day.

I feel that it heals pimples and minor skin irritations a lot quicker. Will it lessen my fine lines? I suppose only time will tell, but I feel confident about it so far. My skin is feeling more supple and refreshed lately. I use gel moisturisers most of the time but the catch is that the hydration can only go so far; a bit of La Mer at night gets me the perfect amount.

So girls, the hype is real, at least for me! If you love investing in skincare then I recommend you take the deep, deep plunge to La Mer. ^_^ It won't disappoint.

Have a great weekend guys! Any plans so far?
