Reader Question: How often should Pinays wash their hair?

Hi Liz, just want to ask if how often should we shampoo our hair? I'm currently shampooing my hair everyday which I've read was not a good idea. I also have frequent hair fall and it's really frustrating. I've tried a lot of hair products that claims to prevent hair fall but none of them works for me. Any recommendations? Thanks! - Joanne

Hi Joanne! My opinion is that the frequency of hair washing should be approached on a case-to-case basis. It depends on how humid it is, and how exposed you are to the dirt and the sun! Washing too often can strip your hair and scalp of moisture; washing too little may lead to stickiness and stinkiness.

The trick is to find a balance. Try to see how long you can comfortably go without washing your hair, and that's your sweet spot. The truth is we don't need to wash our hair as long as it is clean and not overly greasy.

Personally I wash my hair every other day only as I am out of the house about three or four days a week. I work mainly from home so I can get away with not washing so often. If you commute everyday, however, perhaps it's wiser to clean your hair on a daily basis - at least with a mild shampoo.

If you're experiencing increased hair fall though, perhaps it's not the shampoo, but your lifestyle. Could be stress, could be your diet. Stick with mild shampoos like baby shampoo, and lessen your use of conditioners that may weigh the hair down. Try the Johnson's Baby Shampoo, the one that you can purchase from S&R as it's better than the one sold in local supermarkets. Promise. The one in S&R lathers better and is less drying!

If your tastes run a bit high-end Mustela makes super gentle shampoos for the young critters. ;) It's a baby brand that's careful about ingredients and sensitive skin.

How about you guys, how often do you wash your hair?

Thanks for this post liz, I also experiencing hair fall maybe due to stress at work and my hair become so sticky when not washing for 2 days or 3. I shampoo every other day and also use conditioner everyday due to my hair is re-bonded last 2 years but I figure out that its not healthy using conditioner everyday. I have dandruff because of that and I became frustrated for having that on my scalp so I go on derma and give me a so pricey product which has a mild shampoo and conditioner for now it's super effective but the cost masaket siya sa wallet hahaha

I wash my hair almost everyday. I love the feeling of clean hair after shower. I use conditioner every other day. I think the every other day shampoo-ing doesn't work for me, since I'm always out of the house. Since I don't have mild shampoo, I dilute the shampoo to water. It seems to work better for me.

my hair texture is nicer when i wash every other day but it's not feasible as i commute. :(

i experienced hair fall as well: once because of hormones, and more recently due to stress. it can be difficult to determine what's causing hair fall so to counter it, i "self-treated" for a month by alternating between Pregro shampoo and an organic gugo shampoo. my doctor friend recommended taking vitamin E as well.

it's been slow but my hair's growing back now. :) so my suggestion for your next post? How To Hide Baby Hairs! i look like a little lion! :)

For me, i can do with washing my hair every other day even if i commute. I usually keep my hair in a bun while on the road. Because i have unruly and thick wavy hair, i find that not washing it everyday keeps it at bay. I think it also depends on how fast your hair accumulates oil and how easily your hair gets rid of the shampoo/conditioner scent.

I've been washing my hair every other day for years now, even when I was still commuting everyday. My hair is prone to dryness, so I can't wash it everyday or it'll get even drier. My tip for commuting ladies is to style your hair into an updo (bun, ponytail, etc) on the second day so that you don't have to deal with the smell of pollution and excess scalp oil by washing your hair. Well, that's me...some girls go through life washing their hair everyday with commercial shampoo, yet their tresses are still beautiful and glossy. Lucky girls!

I have naturally curly hair so I don't shampoo my hair everyday cos if I do, I look like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket. I usually wash it every other day. I also had increased hair fall after giving birth last year. My doctor said it was nothing to worry about as a lot women who just gave birth experience it due to hormonal changes. Thankfully, everything's back to normal now.

i work in a hospital and i wash my hair everyday..i tried anti-hair fall shampoos from different brands but i don't think they work on me :D i guess it's the stress that comes with work that causes it..thanks ms. liz for recommending these 2 products. however i shall try first using the J&J baby shampoo :D

I wash my hair everyday and have been experiencing hair fall for around two years now. Sigh. I guess to time to change my shampoo again :)

Ohh are the j&j baby shampoos from s&r better for washing makeup brushes too? I'd check on that. As for me, i wash my hair everyday when i'm out because of sweat and dirt and pollution but like you, if i'm just staying at my house, i could get away with washing every other day, especially when it's rainy like these days. The use of dry shampoo is not yet very popular in our country, noh? I wonder why, considering how humid it is in our country, and companies know better that most people wash everyday, and that it's not good for our hair. Have you tried using dry shampoo na? Thank you for this helpful post! =)

I wash my hair everyday because my scalp is really oily and I go out everyday. Before I really have a bad case of hair fall and I thought it is because of frequent washing. Added to that I also had dandruff that's really bothering my daily activities since they tend to itch whenever I'm stressed with activities. After changing my lifestyle and eating healthy, these problems were lessened and noticed that not only my hair improved but also my skin. I also tried drinking vit e since according to research vit e is good for the skin and hair. Drink more water too. :)

I wash my hair everyday, mainly because my skin's oily and the oil tends to crawl onto my hair,(which, unfortunately, is baby-fine) if I leave it unwashed. I can go a day without washing though, if the weather's cold enough. I've also read somewhere that excessive hair fall can be caused by hormones, but also, that we do regularly shed at least 100 strands of hair a day. According to this article in Wikipedia:

"Hair follicle growth occurs in cycles. Each cycle consists of a long growing phase (anagen), a short transitional phase (catagen) and a short resting phase (telogen). At the end of the resting phase, the hair falls out (exogen) and a new hair starts growing in the follicle beginning the cycle again.
Normally, about 40 (0-78 in men) hairs reach the end of their resting phase each day and fall out.[10] When more than 100 hairs fall out per day, clinical hair loss (telogen effluvium) may occur..."

Hope that helps!

I wash my hair everyday, even when I moved 2 countries na. That's because I sweat when I exercise plus the sand and the dust. I think in Metro Manila, especially if you commute, you should wash and shampoo your hair everyday. Sobrang kadiri kaya yung polusyon on the road. It is a nightmare if you don't wash! Eeek!

Cool, I never thought that I can use baby shampoo.
I'm experiencing hair fall since it has been bleached before.
Good for me, I'm usually at home since my work is a home-based job. :D

Loving it!♥

I use shampoo every other day, and conditioner on the days that I don't shampoo. I find that this works for me, and it actually reduced the amount of hairfall I had.

yay, im using the j&J baby shampoo to my baby rhaine =)

my hair needs to be washed everyday coz of our country's 'all-year-round' hot season... good thing is, human heart nature has mild shampoos to choose from! and of course, johnson's baby shampoo will forever be one of the best for babies' hair and young at heart like me and you too guys! ^^

Thank you for this, Liz! I also experience hair fall and I'm kinda worried about it. I'm gonna try your advice and I hope it works! :) Thanks again! xx

Thanks for the tip. It's nice to know that I can also use my kids shampoo. They also used Johnsons Baby Shampoo from S&R which is better than in local supermarkets since it's made in different formula I think?
I heard so many people obsess about shampooing their hair every day because they think anything less will result in dirty, smelly hair. But shampooing three or four times a week is enough but I agree that it is depending on your lifestyle.

I shampoo my hair every other day even though I commute going to work. I don't encounter a lot of smoke when I'm going to school that's why I only shampoo about four times a week. I also condition my hair after every shampoo so that it won't get dry. I use clarifying shampoo from human nature and cream silk pink as my conditioner but I plan to switch to a human nature conditioner when I finish my present conditioner. Don't forget to treat your hair to an intensive mask once a week! =)
